Hello! Obviously, I'm not a theatre major but I'd still love to participate. I've heard about Lapu but according to the description on the UCLA website it seems to be aimed at Asian Americans. Is the group limited to that?

Also, I've heard about Hooligan and Act III and Theatre Underground but was wondering if they were very difficult to audition for or whatnot. Any help is appreciated. Thank you! :)

Lapu does consist mostly of Asians but there are also some non-Asians in it too. Their performances are all original skits and improv so if you like writing scripts and creative/avant garde type of stuff, it is a great group to be part of.

Hooligan has mostly non-theatre majors and they accept anyone who wants to join. Auditions are competitive but they have a policy of making sure that anyone who wants an acting role and has been involved in tech or administrative stuff for more than a quarter gets one.

Act III has a lot of theatre majors and they give really polished shows so auditions are pretty competitive. I’m not familiar with their policies, but I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities to be involved.

Theatre Underground must be new because I’ve never heard about it.

Oh yeah, there’s another group called Color and Light and they do musicals and plays like Hooligan and Act III too.

My roommate is a producer/director for Hooligan! The group seems very fun and great to work with. They apparently had about 6 pages worth of names and emails from the Activities Fair, so I got the feeling it’d take lots of talent to get a good role (I don’t personally know anything about the technical work and production behind performances though, I’m just a casual lover of Broadway). I’m sure Hooligan accepts all people-- as good of a group they are, they don’t seem to be so exclusive.

She just told me that “it’s not too difficult to audition, but we have workshops and have stuff for [everyone] to do.” And for the big musicals, they do their best to include everyone who wants to have a part on the stage.

The welcome BBQ is on the 22nd at 11:30 am at Sunset Rec, Musical screening on the 23rd at Dodd, and a couple of others (you probably have the card already). :)

Oh yeah, I failed to mention that I’m even part of Hooligan. It’s a really great group and I really recommend people who’ve had minimal or no theatre experience to start there because they train you and build your confidence.

IMShynZ: You should check out FPS (Film and Photography Society). Every year, the club creates a professional-quality film and they give a screening of it. There’s always a lot of hype around it and judging from the trailers I’ve seen, the films are really legit.
