Theatre Major Admission Rate

Hey everyone!

I have seen on CC how it is much more competitive to apply to NU as a theatre major due to the 50/50 cap. I was wondering if anyone had any specific statistics. (Like average theatre major acts, acceptance percentages, etc)
I also have heard that being a Cherub gives you an advantage. I was wondering to what extent. Out of the 160 Cherubs, tons of us applied ED and there is obviously no way they can accept all of us.

Also, has anyone heard anything from the office of admissions about the ED class this year. Since 25% more applicants applied, I am really hoping they accept more than usual!

Thanks!
Have a great day :)

You may also want to post this on the Theatre & Drama Majors forum.

I do not believe the admit rates for theater are offered anywhere. I can say my DD was waitlisted, and later admited off the waitlist. Her stats/ECs were strong-based on CC criteria, and we were surprised she was waitlisted, even with the 50/50.
Best of luck to you-NU’s program is all they espouse it to be, and more, IMHO.

My S is currently a freshman and was a Cherub. (He applied ED.) There are about 20 former Cherubs in his freshman class. The same is true of the current sophomore class. But I have not seen any recent statistics as to average SAT’s, ACT’s, etc. I can tell you that my S did not have strong standardized test scores by CC standards. They are obviously looking for more than just test scores, based on a sample size of one. :)

Thank you so much for your responses!
I am very jealous that your children are in the program. Hopefully, I will be joining them next year! Would you mind sharing their stats just so I have a better grasp of the selective major. Also, did they ever know any Cherubs that were rejected?

Yes, there are clearly a number of Cherubs who are rejected! In fact, we know one who was rejected by NU and accepted at Harvard…so clearly, NU is looking for more than just grades and standardized test scores.

momof3sons is absolutely correct - which is why the “chance me” threads are so ridiculous; every school is looking for more than just grades and test scores. My daughter was accepted into Yale but waitlisted at Northwestern for Theatre. She was then admitted (with an apology in her letter for having to wait to find out which was very nice) and has since won an award never given to a Freshman and admitted into the Musical Theatre Certificate Program. The whole thing is a crapshoot and never take college admissions or rejections personally.

Congrats!! Glad to hear things have worked out so well for her.

So how difficult is the Theatre program to get into? Like what is the percentage applying ED that get in… just curious…

and the 50/50… That means they only accept 50 people into the program??

and also, what is a Cherub?

I have many questions…

It’s difficult to be accepted into the theatre program. I have never seen statistics indicating the percentage applying ED who are accepted.
50/50 refers to the fact that the Theatre class has generally been capped at 100 students, 50 boys/50 girls, although those 50/50 numbers aren’t totally “perfect.” The current freshman theatre class has slightly less than 100 students, to the best of my knowledge.

A Cherub refers to kids who have done the National High School Institute’s summer theatre program on the campus of Northwestern. This is a competitive program offered to rising high school seniors. http://www.northwestern.edu/nhsi/
