I was wondering if those applying as theatre majors are assessed with the other theatre majors or with all the applicants, because it may make some kind of difference in what admissions officers look at and whatnot. If that makes sense, because I know NU is not an audition-based school.

Also, I was just wondering how likely I would be to make it into NU. I’m in the top 10% of my class, I will have taken a total of 9 AP classes, 3.85 UW GPA, 2010 SAT & 32 ACT (I would probably submit ACT unless my SATs magically go 100+ points higher). I’ve taken 3 SAT subject tests with okay but not very great scores (700, 690, 580). I’m heavily involved in the performing arts specialized subdivision at my school, including musicals, plays, showcases, opera, caroling, vocal jazz ensemble, dinner theatre that included a 1-act that I wrote, and a lead role in an original musical. I’m also secretary of Thespian society and president of a club and an officer of another. I just know that Northwestern has very high academic standards but also has an acclaimed theatre program, which is the kind of school I’m looking for. Also, being non-audition, it becomes a little less scary, haha.

Thanks for any input!

I can’t tell you how likely you are to get in, given the low acceptance rate, but I will say that you are a competitive candidate based on the little bit that you shared. You are in the ballpark. But with the low admit rate, not all qualified candidates are admitted. You should definitely apply as you appear to be someone who would be considered, based on the little bit you shared. However, I would only send the ACT scores and not the SAT ones since you did better on the ACT (unless your SATs improve).

I will also say that my son’s SAT and subject test scores were very similar to yours and he was accepted for theater this year. So definitely apply.

I agree you should definitely apply! You also have time to re-take both the SAT and ACT. It might increase your odds, and certainly couldn’t hurt (at least it won’t hurt for more than the day you take the tests). ;-D

When we visited we were told by the head of the Communications department that since they first take the 100 most academically qualified applicants, ideally 50 male and 50 female, then start reviewing theatre ECs, essays and recommendations, admission to the NU theatre department ends up being more competitive than most other schools within NU, so every little bit you can do to make yourself attractive will be worthwhile. We have heard it is more competitive for females (isn’t it always in theatre), but I don’t know for certain.

If you’re looking for a strong balance of academics and theatre, you might also consider applying to Yale and Brown, as D knows folks accepted to both of those schools who were not accepted to NU and they’d also be great alternatives. As soozievt says, any of these schools are a bit of a crapshoot even for someone who is qualified (as you seem to be).

Hope D sees you at NU in a couple of years!!
