Theatre Management?

Does anyone knows specific schools that offer a theatre management degree or performing arts management degree? I'm looking for backups in case I don't get into an MT program next year.

Thanks a lot!! :)

Wagner College offers an Arts Administration degree. They also have close relationships in NYC with theatres for internships.

Ithaca College has one:
Theater Arts Management (B.S.) - Theatre Arts - Ithaca College

U of M's BTA (Bachelor of Theatre Arts) program has an optional Performing Arts Management subconcentration.

I think OCU does, but I don't know what it is called. It may be through the school of dance.

Check out North Carolina School of the Arts. A friend of my D is there in Production and Design and loves it.

At JMU we have students who combine Musical Theatre or Theatre with a Non-profit studies minor. This includes an internship with a theatre co in Arts Management.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! If any one knows of any more, feel free to like me know!!

KatMT, I was looking over the website for JMU. Can a student combine the BM with a musical theatre concentration with the non-profit studies? I'm not sure if it's only possible with the BA degree.

Thanks!

Yes -- I believe it is possible to do the BM in Music with the concentration in Music Theatre with the non-profit studies minor. I currently have a student in my acting class who is a BM Vocal Performance Major with a non-profit studies minor (and a Theatre minor too, I think!).

The BM Music Theatre Concentration in the school of Music is similar to the Vocal Performance Concentration with a cluster of courses in Theatre and Dance, 1/2 of your repertory in voice lessons and on your recital is in Musical Theatre... the other 1/2 is classical.... there are other course differences as well, but generally speaking....

If you did try to combine the BM with the non-profit studies minor, you would most likely do your internship in the summer in order not to get behind in your voice lesson level changes.

If you would like me to send you a side-by-side comparison of the curriculms for the BA degree in Musical Theatre and the BM in Music Theatre PM me with your email address. Or email me at arecchkm@jmu.edu.

You can also go on the JMU website and go to the on-line catalog to see the differences in the degree requirements.

The BM and the BA students are integrated in all Musical Theatre Performance, Acting, Dance, and Music classes. The biggest difference is that the BA Musical Theatre students are required to take more classes in Theatre, and the BM Music Theatre students are required to take more classes in Music.

Best of luck with your college search!

Hartt has a performing arts management degree program.

Otterbein has degrees in Arts Administration - as either a major or a minor, it looks like. Dr. John could give you more info.

Friend's daughter graduated from DePaul University with BFA in Theater Management and is now employed in the field.
