Theatre Opportunities at Wellesley

Hi,
I'm a rising senior and Wellesley is on the top of my list of potential colleges, but I have one main reservation about it. Wellesley does not offer musical theatre as a major, and I honestly cannot find out much about opportunities for musical theatre through the school or the community. Does anyone have insight into whether or not there are abundant opportunities for students interested in pursuing theatre at an extra-curricular level? I plan to major in chemistry or neuroscience, but I don't want to lose theatre in my life. Also, are dance classes offered? Thanks so much!

Hi there, I am a senior who just graduated and is applying to college in the fall. Theatre is also a HUGE part of my life - moreso the technical side than anything else - and I’m considering applying to Wellesley, so I’ve done a bit of research - I just can’t give you any info that would come from a current student.

Wellesley offers a major and minor in theatre studies. Most LAC’s label their theatre programmes as “theatre/theatre studies” or “drama” - I haven’t really seen “musical theatre” as a major in any non-conservatory school. Here is a link to the theatre studies department: http://www.wellesley.edu/theatre/majorminor</a></p>

Also, take a look at this website http://wellesleysummertheatre.com/</a> which (I believe) hosts all things extracurricular-theatre at Wellesley (ignore the “summer” part). According to an online directory, there is a group for putting on student-written plays. It appears that past shows are only dramas, not musicals. I could be 100% wrong, so you’d want to check with a current student, but it doesn’t appear that there’s really an outlet for musical theatre at Wellesley. However, being near Boston probably has its perks when it comes to MT performance opportunities.

I hope this helps a bit :)
