Theatre Scene at Brown

I’ve searched several threads/sites and haven’t quite found the answer to this yet…What’s the theatre scene like at Brown? Competitive? Are classes tough to stay afloat in (from TA0003 on), and what are auditions/directors like? Any thoughts on this would be utterly swell.

i thought this thread was pretty informative:

TA0003 is definitely not difficult to stay afloat in, but it's definitely fun. Auditions for student run shows are pretty low-key. Basically, there are a TON of opportunities.

Some of the classes can be difficult to get into because of limited enrollment. Just keep in mind that in most cases you need TA23 to get into any other upper division acting course. The two intro acting courses TA3 and TA23 are also mandatory S/NC so you shouldn't have to worry about grades. I would highly recommend taking TA3 as a CAP or regular course, and email the instructor Connie Crawford directly about your interest in the course as registraring for the class does not guarentee you a spot. Also, if you complete TA3, you'll be more likely to make the cut for TA23.

Thanks for all the helpful advice!
aidnked- I actually put down crawford's ta03 class as my CAP..so you suggest emailing her in advance to help me get in? is that too forward?
Another question...does the speech team still exist? I've done state level competition since my soph year and I heard Brown had a speech team..wondering if its still alive~

You probably don't need to email her if you end up getting the course as a CAP, but if you don't get TA3 as a CAP course definitely email her about interviewing for the course when you arrive on campus.

I took Ta3 my first semester and it was probably one of the best courses ive taken so far.. theres generally two sections, so try getting into the one connie teaches.. She's amazing..

Most people who take Ta3 end up doing 23, so it shouldnt be too hard to get into..

I didnt know about Ta3 almost till the first week was over, but i went and met connie afterwards and she let me in.. Even if you dont get it as your CAP, just keep trying..

When you mention "interviewing" is that a pseudo audition? Or just a chat to talk about background and the like?

Its just a chat about background, why you want to take the course, etc.. Pretty informal overall..
