I’m an incoming '20 and have questions about the theatre community at Dartmouth. If anyone has information or first hand experience, I’d love to hear about it. Is the community active? I read online that there is only a Mainstage musical every other year; are there other musical theatre opportunities throughout the year?
@americannigerian I answered part of your question back in April for another student that was interested in theatre and creative writing. My reply to them:
My daughter is heavily involved in the theatre department at Dartmouth and I forwarded your inquiry to her. She replied as follows:
The theatre department is small and close-knit, but it’s really easy to get involved. All classes are either super-hands on or they’re small, seminar style classes. There’s a mainstage and a student production each Fall/Winter term that uses students in all aspects of the production and the Spring is reserved for putting up senior honours theses (which are completely student run with faculty advisors). We just did Chicago in the winter. There’s some cross between the theatre and creative writing (English) department and I know quite a few people who are double majors/minors with a concentration in creative writing.
Also there’s the Frost and Dodd playwriting festival every winter where students submit original, unproduced one act plays and three are chosen to be produced that summer.
I can ask for more information later today from her that may answer your specific questions in more detail.
