So for example, if I leave my laptop on my desk in my dorm, is it possible for it to get stolen?

I've heard that the atmosphere in the Units is pretty relaxed, so people leave their doors open/unlocked...maybe a roommate would leave it unlocked on accident when you weren't there. Does theft happen?

IE someone walks in and steals ipod/computer/xbox/etc..

I'm kind of worried because there are a couple things in my room that I cant bring with me but I really need to have.

i did that a lot ><. i was lucky i guess.
it’s very possible… maybe people on ur floor or guests from other places…

Ouch…that worries me.

Things like my laptop, longboard, and ipod will be very hard to replace…

I guess just keep my door locked? But then again, my roommate might forget.

I’ve never heard of it but then again I live in foothill. People here just leave there stuff out all the time and doors open (then again in a small suite you know everyone and trust them). But we also keep our suite door open nearly 24/7 so … idk, I’ve never seen it be a concern but in the Units it could definitely be different.

I had a friend who lives up in Bowles and had his laptop stolen. Just make sure if you’re not going to be present/awake for a period of time, I would lock the door. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Stuff gets stolen if you’re stupid about it. I heard stories about a guy who left his Mac right next to his open window on the first floor. Someone just walked by outside and grabbed it.

But I’ve left my room door open many times when I need to go somewhere quickly, and I trust my hallmates.

ya i think it depends where u live. i leave my door open all day and no one even comes in. sometimes our suitemates left their doors open by accident and were goen for a weekend. we just all respect each other.

not to say we didnt pull pranks on each other. i had my keys “stolen” quite a few times :P

for the first few weeks, keep the door open when you’re there and get to know your floormates. after a while, you’ll feel better. Doesn’t mean you should leave ipods and computers out in the lounge if you’re in the Units. You just have to be smart about it. If you’re insecure about your computer, definitely buy a lock for your computer to thread around in your room (that’s what I have). Put it this way: if you treasure your items, then protect it and be smart with what you do about it. Especially if you’re going to live in a place as open as the units. It’s definitely not a terrible place to live, but theft does occur occasionally (girl on my floor had her credit card stolen. lulzworthy but still sucks).

I’ve actually lived on the same floor 2 years. Last year, everybody tried to take their stuff back to their room or at least check that someone was going to stay in the lounge if they were leaving to get food or something. This year, everybody just leaves all their crap lying around everywhere, like there’s 4 macbooks just on the table for hours straight when nobody’s in there, it’s ridiculous. Someone’s headphones got stolen this year from the lounge (but she might have just lost them). Otherwise, nothing’s ever happened.

I am the cathamburgler. I will burgle EVERYTHING you own that’s of value. Be EXTREMELY afraid. If you have a dog I will stay away.

yea, on our floor we basically leave our doors open for long periods of time even when no one is in the room. Its when we leave the building where we close the door. But if your roommate has friends over, they could be sketchy and steal something…nothing you can really do to prevent that except hide and lock stuff up I guess. One of my friend’s phone was stolen in said way.

I trust my friends and floormates enough to leave my door open for a short period of time. Of course, if I’m out for the night, I’ll close it, but it’s usually okay.

I have left my laptop in the lounge for a few hours straight - yeah, a little stupid, but there’s usually someone in the lounge that I trust to make sure my laptop doesn’t get stolen.
