Our daughter had her wallet stolen in the common room of her dorm. A few days later she found the wallet but the cash was stolen. She never told her dorm parent or advisor. I asked her to report it but she doesn’t want to. What are your thoughts?
She should definitely report it. There is a security/safety issue in her dorm, and as a member of that community, she should alert others. At DS’ school, kids were super trusting with all their things. If money and laptops and other items were going missing while they were unattended, however, kids would have changed their behavior accordingly. People leave things at their own risk, but they need to know what that risk is!
It is possible that the kids knew there was an issue and were advised and that your daughter did not heed the warning. As a result, she is embarrassed to report it. She should, however. Let’s just say that someone was caught stealing and was expelled. The school thinks the issue is resolved. Your daughter’s situation reveals it is not. They too should be working to find the issue and address it.
She should report it. She may have been able to absorb the loss, but many other students might not be able to. Th e schools take theft very seriously, as they should.
I agree. She should report it to the campus police. They need to report stats to the government concerning crimes on campus. It is important for others to be aware of the danger.
@MassDaD68, prep schools generally don’t have campus police, although they may have security. Nor are prep schools covered by the Clery Act.
My husband and I both convinced her to report. The students keep their dorm rooms unlocked which I was very surprised about. Hopefully, this will make the students more aware of watching their belongings.
I don’t think keeping door unlocked is out of the ordinary. My daughter’s room door is typically open.
My kids’ BS didn’t even have locks on dorm room doors.
None of my kids have ever locked their dorms at school. Not having to watch their belongings at prep school was one of the unexpected benefits of attending their school. Of course, once they headed to college, they had to unlearn their total disregard of personal security. We did have a problem a few years ago with things going missing on campus, the offender was quickly caught and ended up leaving the school for a multitude of reasons.
