Next year I'm headed to the University of Oklahoma, which if you aren't familiar with it is a medium-sized state school in a small college town. I used to live there until 4 years ago, and I loved the town and its surroundings..everyone is nice, polite, basically southern hospitality in the southwest.

My question is, in this type of environment (medium sized state school) is theft a problem in the dorms? I would like to take my $700 guitar and a laptop (well, I have to take a laptop) with me...I'm mainly worried about the guitar. I'll be getting a random roommate probably, which I'm fine with, except that someone who I still don't know will have access to my guitar and laptop.

Any ideas for security? Should I not take my guitar? Though that really isn't an option...Should I lock the case to the underside of my bed? Have you had any problems with theft?

Things will only get stolen from you if you are stupid (or your roommate is stupid). So just use common sense. Make sure your doors/windows are locked when out of the room, etc.

Never hang stuff on your door and never use a public cubby. I lost over $100 worth of stuff because some crummy little creep had the nerve to vandalize and rob my stuff.

you can always buy a trunk and put a lock on it...then within the trunk, you can have a smaller box that locks with your money and other more valuable stuff.

The most important thing is to keep your laptop/ computer locked up... I've heard that's the #1 stolen item in colleges. (Calculators are stolen in high school as laptops are stolen in college, haha)

I go to a ~4000 undergrad private school, and people always leave their doors open and there have been 4 gaming consoles in one of the lounges since the begining of the year and only 2 games have been stolen and none of the consoles. However, I don't recommend doing that.

Lock your door whenever you leave and make sure that your roommate does the same. Either get a laptop lock or simply never leave it unattended unless it's in your room with the door shut and locked . I've been keeping my viola in my closet with the door shut most of the time, and most people don't even know that it's there.

always lock your door.
at my school, most of the times, thieves are kids from town. if they have a chance to get into the dorms (i.e. during a party), they'll go around and take whatever they can.
