Themeless essays?!

This is a fairly pointless post, as I've already applied EA, but what is the general consensus on "themeless" essays?

I wrote two essays - one constructed of small anecdotes from childhood strung together to give a sense of myself and then linking growing up poor to being creative, and a supplemental essay that was very abstract. It was more about how I saw the world, all the enjoyment in random, everyday things, and how much I wanted to learn (except... you know... not that blunt and cheesy) all done in literary language.

When I showed it to people, they generally liked it but a few made the comment of, "What's your topic?" and "I don't know if they like themeless essays." Does an essay have to have a very sharp focus to be good?

yes. college essays are all about themes

Nonsense, if the theme enhances the creativity and fluidity of the piece, use it. If not, don't worry about it.
