<p>I strongly disagree. Applied mathematicians use several years down the road what theoretical mathematicians invent. If you're really good at theoretical mathematics, then you'll (eventually) make a big difference. I mean, who a few hundred years ago thought that finding the area under a curve would make that much of difference (and think where we'd be without the integral)? I guess picking a career is kinda like economics- you'll do best if you pick what you most efficiently do.

<p>Yeah, to put it my favorite way -- applied math tends to concern itself with problems that can be solved IN ORDER to facilitate some sort of application, whereas pure math asks natural mathematical questions within the framework of the current state of the theory, and lets the naturality of the questions be its guiding spirit, rather than any raw application.
