Theory...

Think about it... Why not apply for FA, even if you do not need it, and withdraw later in the game...

If they are iffy about your or something it will give them a hard second look. If they are placing you in deny it will make them take the file out to check "no more FA" and they will take another look.

I was just wondering how it would work. If I had to dish out 36 grand to some kid and he called me and said that he would pay it would give me a harsh second thought.

If you don't app for FA at first you will get a hard look but you do not have that chance for redemption from that deny pile...

Idk, I'm bored so I'm sitting here browsing CC...

I think the negative of this would be that some people try to play the game of applying full pay the first year in order to have a better chance of acceptance. Then they apply for FA the second and subsequent years. (or so I have read)

So if I were an admissions officer I might think that you were on the line about whether you could afford it and then may worry you will apply for FA next year when I haven't planned out any money for you.

Does that make sense?

It makes sense. What I am proposing is sly and stupid, trying to rip off people more...

I would never do it, was just wondering.

I'm sure it's been done before.

True... but if you are absolutely positive that you wouldn't qualify, why apply? My family's financial planner told us that we could affor something like 75K per kid per year ( which we couldn't... don't know how he computed that...)

What is the point of applying if you won't qualify?

Uh, my family applied for it. We knew we had enough money, but in these times, who wouldn't want to see if they could get a scholarship or some financial aid? This makes me a little unhappy, because we pulled out after we got our letter that told us how much we could afford to pay. A lot. But we didn't do it to get a "leg up" on the competition.

I'm just a little insulted.

People might be able to pay for 80k of a 40k tuition, but seriously? It is difficult to guage how much a family actually spends on just living and breathing on a piece of EFC paper. Whatever, they include food and tax and all that crap, I don't believe they can factor in everything. They said I could pay for quite a hefty amount of boarding school tuition, but our family would live extremely modestly by paying full.
