Hi transfer forum folks,

I am starting in the fall as a freshman at a top 40 liberal arts college. It's a good school overall, but I am somewhat unhappy that my major (art) is in a small, underfunded, and perhaps irrelevant department of the college. My dissastisfaction with the department peaked when I received very little feedback from the art competition that took place for scholarships earlier this year. Ironically enough, I subsequently submitted the same portfolio to a couple of prominent art schools and I received significant scholarships on account of it. I understand that the judges were different and perhaps the department's goals differ from those of art schools. Nevertheless, I am not sure I want to attend a college which I feel pretty much disregarded a significant talent of mine. I've posted similar thoughts on the art majors forum in the past few months, but because of certain happenings I felt it necessary to ask on this forum what I should do.

See, when applying to colleges last year, I had also applied to a top 20 university. Although I feel I was a decent candidate based on my academic record and extracurriculars, this school is notorious for getting many qualified applicants. So, I was rejected but I don't think it had to do with my art (didn't fill out the supplemental art form). Anyway, I recently contacted the transfer dept. at the university and they have basically "okay-ed" me to transfer for the 2nd semester of my freshman year.

It sounds like a good offer, but...

Do you think I am treading dangerous ground by going into my first semester knowing I will transfer really soon? Or do you think because of my strong interest in my major, that I am doing what one would naturally do? Basically, at this university, I feel that I could both pursue my art (BFA) and even perhaps get my BA in another field I am interested in. It would definitely give me some options, which I don't really have at the LAC.

OR

I could just dump the LAC and go to one of the two art schools that accepted me. The benefit of attending art school is that one of the two is close to my home and that only from it can I transfer to a more focused art school like RISD for the spring semester.

It's a lot of choices.

Let me know what you think. I appreciate your time.
