There is more to uchicago than this website is letting on...

myketb,
glad you had a good time visiting. As you have already worked out, Chicago students will argue about nearly anything - but the ones that are already there will have mellowed a bit. Hope that you will soon be a Maroon and in the running for a Rhodes a few years down the road!

will i be in the running for a Rhodes?

No. Not at all.

oooh Esquared, a Rhodes requires talent.

man you guys were way too hard on myketb..

In fact, I would personally like to thank myketb for finally ending the debate on whether or not UofC is where fun goes to die...I feel a lot better about going there.

Why are you guys alll hating on myketb,, drinking, parties, and sports?
There is plenty of time for fun in any school...

Why is drinking considered fun?

Drinking can be fun, without a doubt.

Oh man, I think I started something here. I find it quite amusing that some of you are so critical of anything “non-intellectual” but eh, to each his own. Maybe the term “under represented minority” is not referring to me being an African-American, but has more to do with what I think is a good time? But we are definitely starting to beat a dead horse here so……..new subject. And excuse my sarcasm.

Who’s all with me on staying in Max P next fall? Perfect location- across the street from the biggest library, the athletic center (where gasp you’ll find football players working out), and (god forbid) frat row. Not to mention it is mostly freshman, and maybe most importantly, it has the best dining hall. Any other opinions?

It's a very beautiful building! :p

I really like Snell but you know, there's that whole you-have-to-get-accepted-to-the-college-first-before-you-worry-about-housing thing. So um, yeah.

Good point spirited- I forgot to mention the excellent architecture and the superb choice of colors. Or it's god-awful ugly. You choose.

Max P. is hideous. I really don't understand the color theme. It does have the best dining hall, but so does snell.
For some reason, I find there's alot of animosity towards max p.

...I'm between snell and shoreland. Snell has the best location and it's pretty--BUT antisocial. Shoreland has awesome dorms and is among the most social (big rooms for parties)-- BUT it's 10 mins away (and has cruddy dining)

What things are you guys looking for most in where you are going to live? For me, it's all about location; I could care less what the outside of my building looks like or even how big my room is. And I really do think I am alone in thinking Max P isn't that bad from the outside- I'll never need coffee to wake me up, I'll just run outside and look at my dorm. Which one is the big concrete one- Pierce ? That's the ugly one.

Pierce looks pretty ugly and the rooms are teeny, but it's also very social, not a bad location, and you don't have go outside to eat (definitly a plus in normal chicago winters)

Isn't Pierce where "all the normal people are located" ?

Jesting... 1.2.3.

I've heard that MAx P. is antisocial, and now I hear that Snell is antisocial. I'm sure every single dorm has fun and itnersting people in it, it just needs to be ina central location and to have nice rooms and people. I'm sure we'll survive even if we don't live in our chosen dorm.

From what I've been reading, it seems like every dorm is antisocial except Pierce and Shoreland. I wonder, what does that say about Chicago students. A lot of dorm pride, or really antisocial.

I believe one will find that most people believe "their" dorm is "the" dorm and the rest don't compare. Bonding is a wonderful thing.

I'm not really even sure what their definition of "anti-social" is anyways. Do they mean that people aren't friendly and don't speak to each other? I would find it highly unlikely that a group of young people can live in the same cramped place with each other for nine months and not so much as say "hello." Or do they mean that there are no parties thrown in an "anti-social" dorm? For me, that might be a good thing; it's always a bad policy to have a party in the same room you sleep.

myketb: What am I looking for in a dorm?

3 things(in order):
Single room
Elevator (for moving stuff in/out)
Private bath

Private bath is nice, I agree (only thing- you have to clean it). I never thought of the elevator for moving in, but I guess you only have to move in once. Max P has both of those which is nice- the elevator is painfully slow though. I don't know about a single room though, I don't have nearly enough personality to keep myself entertained. I would get bored talking to myself.
