Is there an easier major or something I can apply for so that I have a chance of getting in from OOS? I'll probably have around a 3.87 GPA by the end of junior year and a 30 on the ACT, so I won't get in from OOS. Is there some easier major. I really really really really want to go to Chapel Hill; its by far one of my top 2 and it sucks that I don't live in NC, but is there something at all I can do besides raise the ACT?

you dont need amazing stats, i had a 3.4 uw (though its not as bad as it sounds cuz i had 4.3 w and was top 5% at a top hs), and 1510/2200, got in from ct

The oos stats are usually pretty darned good, but I think writing samples/essays and interesting ecs can really be the deal maker (or breaker) for oos candidates.

My D is an oos and has between a 3.6 and 3.75 unweighted and she got in. Her SAT scores are great but not in the stratosphere. She writes killer essays since English is her thing and she has alot of depth in her EC's. She went to visit the campus and interviewed with the head of the department that she was interested in. He told her that can make a difference. She is very well rounded and has done alot of community service that she has designed and led but still... I think so many kids are so talented and it is all the pieces that they look at..every single one. I did not get the impression that UNC is driven by stats in admissions. Many other schools are and there applicants are self selecting so if you are not in the numbers you are out of the game! We had one school tell us in Illinois that they do not read the app if you are not in the score range they are looking for. What that range is who knows. As many of you know, Iknow kids who I would pick many times over with lower GPA than some of the kids with very high ones. I really have to hand it to admissions.. I don't know how they do it?!

fit is very important. im pretty sure i got in b/c my answers hinted that i would fit in at unc. definentely mention why you belong at unc in your essays.

As an oos applicant, you have to really show UNC that you belong at their school, since for oos applicants, competition is fiercer. I'd advocate spending a lot of time on your application, carefully and creatively answering the short answer questions (they were fun, lol), and doing a great job on your essays. For my long essay, I wrote about a spelling bee defeat that shaped my love for words, then tied in a secret place I go to write, and for my short essay, I chose to write the first page of my novel, basically implementing a Socrates' quote: "The unexamined life is not worth living." My stats were far from spectacular - 1040 SAT, and knowing this, I tried to compensate by creating an outstanding application, indicative of my greatest qualities.
