These here colleges excel in the sCiEnCeS!!

What colleges excel in the sciences, med school prep, and research opportunities? I would like to know all the top knotch schools with bio programs, but also other options because my stats aren't exactly stellar.

All the Ivies, Stanford, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, and other LAC's that I don't know much about (particularly about research).

These are colleges I'm planning on Applying to:
Duke, JHU -Reach
UCSD, UNC, Emory-Slight Reach
UT Austin- Match
Baylor and A&M- Safties

Can anyone suggest some more matches for me with excellent science program..UT doesn't exactly have an excellent science program, but I live in Texas.

Here are some articles about changes in biology education
http://www.hhmi.org/BeyondBio101/
from the Howard Hughes medical institute

I don't think Carolina has that strong of a science dept. It's mainly a liberal arts type university(with a strong undergrad business school also).

crazyscientist, your stats are very good and could get you into many places. If you're considering going to a UC, check out UC Berkeley as well; I know its chemistry department is top-noch, but I'm not sure about bio. Even though you're out of state, I'd move UCSD into the match category (it'd be a match/safety if you lived in CA). Also, you might want to consider Rice, I've heard good things about their science departments.

Really UNC Chapel Hill doesn't have a good science department? I'm specifically thinking biology as a major then med school.

Well, im not completely sure, but for example their biomedical engineering program(only 3 eng. majors, and all in the college of arts and sciences) is a joint program with NC state(engineering) and the unc's medical school.

A not often heard of but EXCELLENT science school is Harvey Mudd College.

HMC is really good at sciences, but too different from mainstream colleges for me ha

Its really small though

Michigan-Ann Arbor fits your description pretty closely.

Duke, Hopkins, and Tufts.

i don't think the ivies necessarily excel in the sciences. many of them have crap engineering programs.

oh yeah, good list but it won't hurt to have more slight reaches.

How about URochester? They have a good rep in the sciences. We just visited there a while ago, and had the chance to talk with a number of students who are biology majors. Their workload wasn't light but they had positive things to say about the school.

Ooh - nice Emerald!

Liberal arts colleges accounted for only 8 percent of the undergraduates in four-year colleges and universities but for nearly twice as many of the eventual Ph.D.s.

How about Haverford? Or maybe Reed? (I'm not sure about Reed and medical school but they are reputable for biology and other subjects.)

Not to mention Swarthmore, Carleton, and Williams. All have very strong undergraduate science programs.
