This is actually unlikely as it’s one of the top Sammy chapters in the nation. Their nationals really doesn’t want the chapter to be shut down and ultimately the office of greek life usually defers to the national organizations when it comes to the decision of letting a chapter stay on campus or not. They’ll probably just have a lengthy social probation.
^^^^^They were one of the top Sammy chapters in the '90’s too; the last time they were shut down.
“Trouble came about in the 1990’s, and the chapter was closed in 1994 by the National due to general rowdiness…”
I did not think Umich was harsh enough. There should be expulsions, rather than just slaps on the wrist!
Thoughts anybody?
It said they suspended them for 2 years?
jack, who do you suggest the University expel? And by what authority? Are the few students who are responsible known? In what way did they break a university rule? Do you want to see the university dragged into a situation where they expel students outside of their jurisdiction, and if so, where do we draw the line? If the crime committed were of a violent nature, and the exact culprits known, I would insist on expulsion. But in this case, the University has acted appropriately. Any more would be overstepping its boundaries. Going forward, I think it is up to the courts to decide the individual, and collective, punishment of those involved.
Alexandre, I agree that it may be difficult to pin down exactly who did what.
I don’t agree that it is necessary for the crimes committed to be of a violent nature for the university to expel a student. I think most universities have policies allowing for students to be expelled for criminal activity.
This also isn’t the only incidence of this type of behavior. The incident at Treetops got more attention because the dollar amount of damage was more severe, but the same thing happened at the Boyne Highlands resort.
Particularly pathetic is the alleged “my daddy will just write a check” comment from one of the girls involved.
Jack, I am really not wise enough to judge what offense would warrant expulsion from the University. I always thought that the University is not qualified, or authorized, to try or sentence students for crimes committed off campus, unless the crime is violent in nature.
However, in this case, I do not believe it is possible to determine who was involved, and in what capacity. As such, punishing the fraternity is the only option open to the University.
^^Agreed.
I couldn’t agree more. The University did what they could to punish the fraternity and that should be that. Let the police / lawyers sort it our from there. The school does not need to get into the practice of punishing students for bad behavior off campus.
Facing criminal charges…This is welcome!
This is the way the system should work. It is the judicial system, not the university, that should try and sentence the culprits.
