They Are Up

I got in too. I'm gonna have to check online for FinAid.

Awesome, got the Trustees' Scholarship! (:

2390 on SAT, 4.0 GPA (4.81 weighted)... six APs and six more this year.

My DD got in with 10k scholarship and $5500 stafford unsubsidized loan.. I don't know whether she can appeal for more.
Any appeal suggestion or experience?
I didn't see the admitted department(subject) in the site. We haven't received the information letter.. how long does it usually take?

PUSBound,
Yes, you can appeal by e-mailing the regional admission couselor.
3 years ago, DS applied BMD porgram but did not get in BMD , just regular program. I guess Case thought with his stats, he will not be coming so it did not give him any merit money. I e-mail the regional counselor and she gave him >$22000 (from $0 to start with). Of course, he ended up went to another BMD program.
The key factor when you write the admission couselor is to emphasize how much Case is the number one choice if the merit money is good.

Got in with no scholarship. Very, very surprised about the no scholarship.

SAT: 1550/2260; ACT: 34
Rank 2/258

That is very odd. I beleive the scholarships are automatic based on certain SAT/GPA.

Did you check online to see your estimate? It might be there.

Uh, no. The whole point of scholarships is to offer money to those who are exceptionally qualified in order to encourage them to attend. To imply that your son is so above-and-beyond their normal pool of applicants that they *intentionally avoided offering him a scholarship/I is incredibly arrogant -- as well as incongruous with several of the posts in this thread (for example, see my own, #42) and with your daughter's situation.

Your last two sentences seem to contradict each other. "Of course" he didn't go to Case, yet his letter emphasized that Case was his "number one choice"? Oookay.

Sorry if I could have worded this post less rudely, but I was sort of offended (on Case's behalf) by it.

First of all, congratulations to all of you who got in and also to those receiving generous aid packages.

I would appreciate if some of you could provide some honest insight to my situation. Less than a week ago, I logged into the application status site and discovered I have been placed on the "Alternate List", and that I would be notified of a later decision in April/May. I am obviously frustrated by this, but what's done is done. What do you all think the outcome will be?

-3.46 GPA (w/hardest curriculum offered at HS)
-#7/107 students (top 10%)
-26 ACT score (one point below 50th percentile range)
-president, officer of various different clubs, good amount of community service, good recommendation, and I thought a good essay)
-interview at Case, which IMO went nicely
-expressed a lot of interest

Now, I realize I am not one of the more stellar applicants by any means, but I thought I would've gotten in RD. I had been deferred EA.

If Case doesn't work out, I'll be fine. I still have The Ohio State University (scholars program) and Miami University which I have been accepted to. I wish to major in something along International Business Administration now (which has changed since I applied to CWRU). Econ w/ a foreign language minor would be fine at Case for me.

I would greatly appreciate all replies. I would still love to go to Case, but if they notify me to late, I will have probably already made other commitments. Which brings me to my final question: when do those off the alt. list typically find out?

Also, I sent Case a kind appeal letter last week (maybe not such a great idea) and they have not responded, at all.

Hey rms01,

You sound like a really good applicant, but I feel like the GPA might have affected your decision. You probably go to a difficult/grade deflated school, and in conjunction with a difficult schedule, that GPA is not bad at all... but comparatively, at least based on what I've seen on CC, it may be on the lower end in the applicant pool. Your rank is great, though, which they should have taken into account. >:[

What kind of things did you say in your appeal letter?

I don't know when waitlisted applicants are notified, so I can't really help you there, but it sounds to me like you have a good chance and have done the right things. Wishing you the best of luck.

Thanks for the quick reply.

My school does not inflate grades, but is not that competitive. It's a rural Ohio public school which has sent a few kids to Case in the past I believe. Not a bad school, but as I said, not competitive as far as things such as AP classes being offered. Yeah, GPA is probably what did it.

As far as the appeal goes, I basically wrote about how committed I would be at Case/why I think I would do good there. I also expressed that I am in their percentiles of accepted students from last year's admits. I hope I didn't come across the wrong way by saying that, but I felt maybe some of the stats were on my side.

That sounds like a solid letter! Don't worry, reinforcing your academic qualifications isn't a bad idea; you're showing them that you would be able to handle the work at Case.

Considering all the people here who will not go to Case, rms01, you may have a good chance at getting off the waitlist.

However, you may be better off at OSU orMiami. Both are well regarded schools and are WAYYYY cheaper than Case. As for "generous" financial aid, they are generous with loan money, so if you don't mind graduating with huge loan debt, then ...

Don't give up on Case just yet. Of course look around because you can never be sure as to who they want, but keep them on your radar. OSU and Miami are great schools, but if you want Case, hang in there and see what happens.

Could you guys evaluate my chances at Case?

I got in! I'm considering going to the open house now

Thanks, everyone!

In commonapp she chose 1. premed 2. biological and biomedical sciences and 3. nursing...
How do I know the dept she is admitted for...
We received the information letter, that didn't state anything..

Let me followup with regional counselor on financials.. thx

waitlisted :(

Do you know what the acceptance rate is this year?

Wait, it says in my acceptance letter that I only got a Faculty Scholarship of $5,000. What gives? T^T
