im deciding between two colleges... i like Duke and Dartmouth for seprate reasons... Duke- the atompshere but too south, and dartmouth- lov the parties but its rural... however they both hav lax which is def important... can anyone help me w some pros and cons... also, which college is more preppy???

Make sure o read the sexual mores on the parent's forum.

I would go with Dartmouth....that lawsuit involving Duke is bound to hurt Duke.

Just to specify, there's no lawsuit involving Duke...just three Duke students you'd probably would have actually met through lacrosse...

I would say what location do you like better? Dartmouth is rural, but extremely self-contained in terms of atmosphere. Duke maybe moreso in the South, but the majority of its students come from the Northeast, Florida, and Cali, so not really that different from Northern counterparts in terms of student body (but the surrounding area and staff is certinaly more Southern than the rest).

try reading the RollingStone article

Unless you are talking ED, toss an application both places, let the process play it self out as you never know a decision could be made for you in terms of both, one or none.

i love dartmouth! i got the sense that the students were much friendlier and down to earth than duke. dart has a better social reputation, though duke does have more school spirit due to its sports team. while both schools are relatively preppy, duke students tend to be more conservative than dartmouth.

laxgirl,

I think that you will find that the student body at these schools is very similar. You need to visit both campuses and determine what feels right to YOU. Good luck, you can't go wrong either way.

Glad to see the usual suspects with axes to grind are trying to influence your decision. Laxgirl, don't let an absolutely silly, sensational article in the Rolling Stone magazine (surely the standard for respected journalism) make you go one way or the other. In my opinion, choose the school for its academics- which I think Duke is stronger in.

I'd say Duke...lacrosse is def better at Duke, no matter what lawsuits they have. Its ACC, cmon...
You'd miss the snow though...but thats what winter break is for.

Lacrosse at Duke is better, so if that is critical to your decision go to Duke. but I chose Dartmouth over Duke because I felt it was more liberal, more LACy, more undergrad focused, was more "tight-knit," had more outdoor opportunties, and in all honestly the upper Valley seemed nicer than Durham (the only real place to hang out near Duke that actually had real value IMO seemed to be Chapel Hill). Also, Dartmouth's D-plan which allows for sophomore summer and great study abroad helped me to choose Dartmouth.

Duke......

its crazy, these 2 schools at my high school were always cross-admits.

at my high school, students usualyl choose Dart over Duke

I'd go with Dartmouth...but then again, I live in upstate NY so I'm probably a little bias being from the NE.

Dartmouth is less preppy I think. Id definitely choose it over Duke. Duke seems very cliquey and Dartmouth is a nice, small, close-knit community. I dont think we should bring up any scandals at Duke however because if u dont remember there was a tinsy little scandal at Dartmouth a few years ago where two students killed a teacher.

Um...greendayfan, those were two sophomore HIGH SCHOOL students from a town 25 miles away...people always mix this up.

haha well anyway it was still a scandal involving the school.

Duke is more preppy and if you like parties you will like Duke. Definitely not too Southern. Trust me.

the Dartmouth women LAX team made it to the NCCA championship finals this year. But they lost to Northwestern :( .

Are you looking to get recruited?

yeah what is everyone saying she is lax GIRL. dartmouth womens lacrosse program dominates duke.
