They Love Me; They Love Me Not: When Colleges Court Students Then Reject Them

Tom94368,

Since the program my ds was is rather small, I’d rather not say. If I name the school, I know they could figure out who my son is. I will say that it is one of the schools listed on CC as the top 10 colleges (the number may be 25).

Also I have another one in college and I don’t want my comments here to affect that child’s chances with the program or college. The point of my post was just to caution others that like the OP said, some schools may reject you even if they recruited you. However there were many other schools who gave my Ds fly-backs, scholarships and other recruitment perks who did come through on a college acceptance.

DaddyOh you have summed up the ridulous $50 K tuition in a nutshell. The admissions budget & tuition rate irritates me to know end.

I am a bit surprised to hear how much woo-ing is going on.

So all i have to do is take the SATs and then i can go traveling all over for free. That’s cool! Do you get to go on the airplane by yourself, or do you go with parents? Wow. I can get a bunch of friends together and we can all go. Do you get to stay overnight at the colleges too?

Kollegekid, most kids, even on CC don’t get free rides to visit colleges. f you are an URM with great SAT scores, unusual rec, nationwide recognition for ECs, etc you may be able to. But study hard so that when you are in high school you will have that option.

Just to add my personal experience…
I’m a URM, very high SAT, underrepresented geography, low income, national EC’s, etc.
All of these programs had some sort of app or at least something to send.

Accepted and Attending (full-pay, diversity weekends):
MIT, Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore, Columbia, Williams

Accepted and Not Attending (schedule conflicts):
Caltech, Amherst

Rejected: Cornell

Contacted (did not apply):
Wash and Lee, Resselaer (not full-pay), Smith, Wellesley

All of these made it clear that there was no obligation to apply and there was no obligation on the college to admit you lol.

We’ll see later on in year how many of the five colleges I’m going to for free I get into haha. This is nuts…

Oh, this is disappointing! I received a letter just a couple of days ago from the admissions office of Notre Dame. They are paying for me to fly to Notre Dame on March 31st and fly back on April 3rd. In the letter they are saying all expenses will be paid - air fare, food, entertainment, etc. At the end of the letter they state that they are confident that after I visit that I will make the decision of choosing Notre Dame. I thought it was 99% a sure thing that I would be accepted. But from your post, I guess this is not the case!

funny girl, are you a junior or senior?
