Hey guys I'm from the state of Virginia and i was wondering how much money in grants i would get if my parents make around $90k a year? I'm going to attend a college in Va and they have sent me the fin aid package but there is no grants, only loans...The reason I'm asking is because I think they made a mistake, because in the preliminary fin aid package that they estimated using fafsa that I will get $5k from the VGAP grant. And about a month ago, they mailed home a verification worksheet thing and ask for w2 and tax forms to verify the fafsa info so they can give out that money. I sent in the verification stuff and just yesterday, i got my official fin aid package and it has the EXACT SAME amt of total fin aid, but there's no grants and all the money from that grant went into the PLUS parent loan. Did they messed up and accidentally took away the $5k grant? Everything on my Fafsa is EXACTLY same to the tax forms i sent in for verification because i use that tax form to put in info about my parents income, tax, and etc. I don't get how they said I will get $5k in grants from my fafsa info, and then when i sent in the verification stuff which is EXACTLY the same or VERY similar and now i have $0 in grants. I'm just wondering if they messed up the first time when they said I'm going to get a $5k grant or the second time, and I'm wondering how much money a 90k income family household(w/ a brother also attending college) would get because i talked to my friends about this and they said i shouldn't even be getting any grants in the first place lol...

This is the situatiional sort of question that you need to discuss with financial aid. Maybe there was a mistake made–during the first estimate or the final package. You need to go over the package with the school fin aid folks. We can sit here all day and come up with conjectures and theories but we really don’t know enough of the details that would explain what happened. Do let us know, however, how this is resolved.

yeah your right, the fin aid office is close right now and I’m waiting for them to open tomorrow and I’m stressing out a bit about college and money and just need to rant and hopefully get some advice from people on fin aid.

xD sorry about all the ands in one sentence.

Is VGAP automatic for any Virginia student attending a Virginia school or based on test scores or based on need or anything where you might not have qualified?

The income level sounds rather high for VGAP eligibility. What was your EFC?

D receive a VGAP grant in her FA package this year in a similar situation including a brother also attending college. It does seem like you would qualify for a VGAP grant. It seems like you should have received an award 3 months months ago if you are a newly admitted student. Were you late in applying for fin aid? Were you admitted from the wait list or a transfer student? Are you a continuing student?

Ask the fin aid office for clarification about your award and what accounts for the difference from the earlier estimate.

There could be a mistake. It is also possible the school has no more funds as you did apply for fasfa late.

I didn’t apply the fafsa late. The verification worksheet was just something my school does to make sure the things on your fafsa is correct so they can give out your money. I actually finish my fafsa like a month before it was due. Also I got accepted Early action to, no wait list or transfer.

Let me make it a little bit more clear* lol,

I got accepted to my college around January, did the fafsa right away and got my prelim fin aid i think around march. About 2 months ago, my college sent a verification worksheet just to make everything was correct and matched the info on fafsa. Did the verificaton worksheet with the same tax papers i used to input info for fafsa and then they gave me my official with no VGAP. BTW VGAP is not based on test scores, only on need.

My efc was somewhere between 7000-8000 i think.

Edit:My school doesnt start giving out the official fin aid package until june.

just called them and found out why. Apparently, my fafsa didn’t have info on my parents retirement money, and in the tax forms I sent in for verification did and that retirement money brought my efc up from around 7.5k to 8k and now I’m out of $5k ■■■…Btw the financial aid people are surprisingly nice lol.

I am sorry for oyur loss. You should always make sure that you ask these kinds of question. Finacial aid people are there to help you and it’s always better to know the bad news up front than to get suprirsed with it when the bill comes this August.
