I have been planning and saving money to go back home in Europe during the summer. However, I am afraid that I might miss things such as orientation or anything else significant that is going on prior to the first day of school. People who are in right now, do you remember when and what you did during the summer involving UVA business? Is it ok to be out of the country for the majority of the summer? Do we have summer assignments? Add anything else you can think of. Thanks!

def. not summer assignments, else i would cry

No summer assignments :)

I believe UVA already has the orientation schedule planned out.

What do you mean by summer assignments? If you're talking about summer orientations, they happen right before the fall orientation. That saves trouble from having to come back to the campus.

Summer orientation only happens right before fall orientation if you're an international student.

Yes, the point is, her home is in Europe. So she's int'l.

I was under that impression that she applied as a domestic, instate applicant. But I suppose that she could attend the international orientation or attend no orientation. (I believe 1/4 of incoming students don't.)

That's true. Those who cannot make the regular orientations are placed to the last summer orientation (for int'l) as the last resort. I believe the same is applied for transfer students.

wats the int'l orientation gonna be about? coz i got in as int'l student (only couple months from green card) but i've lived in US and Canada for like 11 years. do i go to the international student orientation?

It doesn't matter actually. You can opt to go to any summer orientation since the options will be there when you sign up for orientation online.

Probably not. It sounds like you've already had an eleven year orientation to the United States.

I have been here for 5 years and have lived only in Virginia. I have my lovely green card but still refer to Bulgaria as my home. I obviously applied as an in-state applicant. I don't mind the international orientation...actually, I am very intrested in meeting people from different countries. I am even considering the international dorm. Anyone can give me any inside info about it?

internationals have their own dorms?

No, but there is an International Residence College. If you are an incoming international student, I'd recommend against the IRC as a first year.

i'd rather dorm w/ friends from school

I'd say if you're an international student and you're not interested in the greek scene, stay away from old dorms. Live in new dorms, IRC, or BROWN!!!

Well, technically, I am not an international I am just interested in international people..haha. I think I am interested in the greek scene as well. I guess no IRC then?

Yeah, you can still go into IRC. In fact 50% of the residents there are Americans. Go for it.

My d lived in new dorms. Her roomate 1st year was international as were another girl in her suite, and one girl in the suite next door to hers was international.

You may want to visit and decide what is best for you.
