Things I like/hate about UCLA

You know it's odd, and I think this just might be a symptom of growing up in Los Angeles... Yes the traffic sucks (the morning traffic is horrid, and that does actually annoy me), however I kind of like my drive home. Sure it takes me 45 minutes to go 12 miles, but it often is the most relaxing part of my day.

you are scaring me!! if the drive at LA is the most relaxing part of your day, the classes at ucla must be really ruthless. I hope not. And as I am going to stay on campus, I will not get the chance to relax in the traffic. HAHA.

most relaxing part of my day

I agree (at least when I'm not in a hurry) about the relaxation mainly because I love listening to the radio, especially when I'm in the car

Driving in LA is a pleasure between the hours of maybe 9 PM and 7 AM. All these huge roads with nobody on them, it's great, and no cops because they're understaffed. Except when Caltrans decides to close 4 out of 5 lanes on the freeway you happen to be driving.

is there anything else to look forward to other than the stars and traffic?

The ability to work with some of the most prestigious faculty in the world, living on a beautiful campus, having the beach at your fingertips...

Like: surrounding area, benefits of honors program, prestigious, strong programs in many majors (not just 1 or 2 standouts), can live on campus more than one year, gorgeous campus, so much to do, all the dorms are in one part of campus (so its easy to visit friends), good food, far enough that I have freedom, safe area (compared to Berkeley and USC in particular), good sports, school spirit, the atmosphere is competitive but its not so competitive that it makes you want to kill yourself (cough cough BERKELEY cough cough), students are well rounded (not just machines that ace classes but have no lives)

Dislike: the only thing I will dislike is if I get put into a triple...those rooms are tiny even for 2 people so I can't imagine a triple room

well i don't attend yet so maybe it's not fair of me to say stuff--but back in the day when i was deciding between SC and LA, i did a pros and cons list for both schools.

a con I put down for UCLA is the lack of fountains on campus. no, i mean i know that there ARE fountains--but the ones i saw were all inverted!!!

i like everything else about the place though.

Caltrans can make a drive a lot more stressful. If you're in a hurry to get someplace and you drive past the construction (if you live in LA you're very used to this sight) you'll see 1 man working and 50 men taking a lunch break! Also the fact that generally speaking, you can never figure out why the road is broken...

Also I suspose I should not, that I'm not actually at UCLA yet. However I drive the LA freeway system on a farily regular basis (deal with the I-5 during rushour everyday, which is no picnic) and have done the UCLA drive several times... It's interesting, the more I deal with the heavy traffic, the more I end up listing to talk radio. It seems to make me a lot more relaxed then a lot of music.

Your story of the Caltran guys reminds me of India, but the only diff. is nobody works, and 1000 people are on lunch.

That reminds me, are there any good indian caf

pixiedanzer,

The fountain by Royce and Powell is definitely not inverted.

*That reminds me, are there any good indian caf

thanks flopsy

Whats with the huge inverted water things (i dont think its a fountain) on campus, it was the first time i had a thing like that, preety neat.
But, are they safe the hole in which all the water was going into looked kinda scary.

Yes, the inverted fountain is safe. If you actually peer into the hole you'll see a thick steel lattice which prevents people from falling inside...

what if i fell into and blocked the hole??... then al the water would overflow =</p>

and the water looked dirty, don't they clean/filter the water.

Yeah, that's the water they filter for the dorm drinking fountains.

what?!!!?!!! i am going to be using water bottles :D , no i am just kidding i have full confidence in ucla

Hey is it true that a USC engineer designed the inverted fountain, so that if you look at it with Franz Hall in the background, it looks like a giant toilet?

hey UCLAri do u stay on campus, if yes which one and what is the scene in the dorms bldgs right now, are most of the people sleepng or is there quite a lot of noise.
