Things I wonder when i am bored

it's understandable to think that you are the only true one though...

It's really hard to grasp the concept of being someone else...

Haha, you merely imagined that because I imagined you saying that. You are all figments of my imagination.

evil chuckle

So there. :D

I actually dreamed I was my dog once, though. It was weird. I didn't see myself, though. :(

"when i was little i used to wonder if i was the only being in existence in the whole world, and everything else was a figment of my imagination (that must have meant i was pretty damn smart... for thinking up everything that has happened since the world began. so.. i imagined someone inventing the atomic bomb... i imagined Van Gogh painting his art... i imagined CollegeConfidential... and i am imagining all of your responses.. and my brain is thinking that you are your own people but really i have created you!) needless to say i have abandoned this theory lol but i think it is pretty interesting"

Solipsism is a lot of fun. I was seriously doubtful of the existence of the outside world when I was about fourteen. I've resigned myself to the fact that I cannot know whether other people really exist, but I'll assume that they do - otherwise it would be lonely.

Here is a question.....What the hell are smells...I know that it is chemical.....but how is a chemical translated into a smell?

o btw i'm not suicidal....at least i am not in reality....whatever that is!

man weedboy, i completely understand you on that.

I wonder... does everyone have these thoughts? or is just that all of us together on CC are a little more geared toward thought than the average populace? I've come to the realization that most people don't even bother thinking about these things through my "best friend" who can't seem to have a thought past wondering whether or not a girl likes him. He is also the reason I question religion (he told me that the Jewish half of my family is going to hell, and going to church makes everything alright for him no matter what he does during the other 99% of his life)

Ok so remember when I was talking about how everything affects everything? Well, I was looking at the Word Association game... and I was watching how what I said a few posts up affected the latest post. Then I got to thinking... the first post actually determined every post to follow it. then again, every post on this thread has led me here. or something. I have to run but I'll return to this thought later.

"I wonder... does everyone have these thoughts? or is just that all of us together on CC are a little more geared toward thought than the average populace?"

Hmm, this is what I was wondering too. I hardly ever hear people talk about things like this in real life, so maybe that's because these thoughts have never entered their minds before. But then again, it might not be the type of thing you talk about (for whatever reason).

How exactly does hair "grow" or start to grow on your head and face? What causes it to want to grow?

Yeah, there probably is a biological answer to that, but what cuases the bio answer itself?

Today I was thinking about how noone on Earth really knows anything. Sure, we may know facts such as what organs can be found in the human body and what their functions are, but noone knows for sure what the purpose of life is, what happens after death, or even if the world is what it seems to be. Everyone simply has beliefs about them.

i hope this thread lasts... it's certainly my favorite...

I wonder why there are forces in the universe. Why is there an electrical force? Why do things attract each other? Why is life force not conserved?

I think more people than you think actually think about random things like this. Of course, I do think we at CC are a little more geared towards these thoughts. I found it startling that everyone else thinks about very similar things that I do. I agree, this is certainly one of the best threads I've posted in. :D

http://www.simulation-argument.com/simulation.html
This is by a philosophy professor at Oxford, and it's pretty damn logical, especially the way the logic/possibilities are articulated.
Have fun.

I was laughing as I clicked the link but the intro (all I've read) is pretty logical, so yeah. weird.

I think it would be fun to take a philosophy class in college and discuss these kind of things for 3 hours a day.

sadly the fun would be ruined by the 12 page paper we'd have to write...

thanks for bursting my bubble. :)

The funny/crazy thing about the article is that the third option becomes almost exponentially more likely by the end of the article, even though he only presents it as one of the three 'options'.
Anyways, yeah philosophy classes discussing such would rock. But if you thought writing papers sucks, imagine doing formal logical proofs on it. Argh.

You guys should read my post here... I'd type a bunch of stuff to you about the real reason religion evolved and is proliferating in our culture today but I'm too damn tired.... so go here....
