I know their are certain things cadets will need to start the academic year off. Things like printer and supplies, and external monitor. Can I order the big ticket items online and have them shipped to him. I don’t know what is readily available locally and if what they have is of good quality. In other words I would prefer to do it right the first time.

Our son wanted a larger external monitor for his laptop, so we had it shipped there and waiting for him at Acceptance.
We just used Amazon.com and it was very smooth and he has his 22 inch wide screen monitor.

They really cannot have much until after recognition. Mattress pads were popular, printers, and like klassmom said the big monitor. Remember you may have to have the packages sent to the package store intsead of the PO Box.

External monitors are currently a privilege at the discretion of the Wing Commander. I would wait until hearing that they got the OK before you run out to buy one.

All the usual office supply stores are in COS, as well as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. Plenty of places to make purchases for the parents since we know Basics are restricted to - nothing! :)

We waited until Parent's Weekend to make the printer purchase, etc. once we had an idea what our cadet wanted, what was allowed by Wing Command, etc. The time from Acceptance Day to PW, if you are going and I HIGHLY recommend it, is less than a month. It was also a great time to take our cadet out shopping after all of us had researched what was wanted and needed in the way of supplies. Basic supplies can be had at the Cadet Store.

There is also a HUGE shopping center in Littleton just 40 minutes up the road toward Denver, easily accessible, and can be seen from the highway.

Forgot to add - be careful with the mattress pads, colored sheets, extra kind of things - these are almost all privileges left for after Recognition.

Current cadets, correct me if I have forgotten the rules.

Mattress pads should be fine, but avoid different sheets, etc. I actually got called out once this year for "unauthorized bedding." I had an extra blanket that mom had sent from home...

A plastic shoe box with sealable lid containing favored food items, and snacks. Your cadets will probably not want to make regular trips to the C-store for goodies.

Definitley have to agree witht he food. I would recommend not just snacks, but also things that can be made into a meal. Be careful about stuff that has to be microwaved though, most squads wont allow it. Personally, I liked the packets of tuna that come with crackers to make a meal when I didn't want to goto Mitch's

agreed with the snacks but also while you're at it, food that can be eaten anytime. A lot of time sweets will be sent like candy and chocolate which is excellent, but gets old. Big favorites are crackers, goldfish, pretzels, basic snacks that can be consumed at any time. Flavored drink mix is also good, for your cadets because they might get tired of water.

As far as other items. Sports equipment is huge especially for intramurals. Cleats and gloves and tennis rackets etc are good for morale as well as a good source of time killing. As always, i would suggest golf clubs and skis/snowboards for the outdoors type. Civilian clothes for these events cannot be brought out, however cadets can golf in PC gear and some civvies are authorized for ski club. Any ?'s on the outdoors stuff shoot em my way, I'm an addict. I'm not sure if four smokes can have climbing equipment or not but there is a ton of excellent rock climbing here in Colorado (except they have to get permission for dangerous activities). There's a ton of technical climbs as well as easy climbs. If people are looking for events on parents weekend after all the normal tourist sites are hit, I recommend climbing because it's a blast and a great workout.

send some boxers & ankle socks (we got like 50 pairs of socks, no joke)

I also want no show socks.... like more than anything! I echo the food thing, some snacks would be fantastic.

I was going to pack some pencils and pens that he likes. He likes 3 ring binders instead of wire notebooks and the re-inforced paper lasted much longer. I purchased some paper to put in his box. I am guessing he will have access to binders. Will this be OK ? Or, does he have to have certain items.

Hi...sorry I'm new to the message board, so I'm not completely sure how this works.

Are there things that are not allowed in care packages to the cadets (especially for fourth degrees)? I've heard electronics and music are not allowed but are there food items or other stuff not allowed? What other items do cadets like in care packages?

Thanks!

Food

More food

Let your Basic ask what he/she wants. That will be the clearest signal of what to send.

Any type of binders, paper, and school supplies are fine.

The best care packages have some tasty snacks as well as some food that's a little more substantial. I ate a decent amount of Ramen this winter...

Do you guys have a way to heat up soup like ramen? I thought that microwaves weren't allowed.

Thanks for the replies! :)

microwaves available in the SAR squadron assembly rooms

Also, we have irons...

"Also, we have irons..." Reminds me of my college days... cookie dough on the bottom of irons... Efficient?...maybe.... Creative?... definately!!!

I want to purchase a "Extended" battery for the laptop they get. I work with networks/computers and know the difference between 3 hours of life compaired to 6 hours of computer life.

Is it posted somewhere what the brand of laptop the class of 2012 will be issued?

and most important, would it be allowed?

a docking station? keyboard and mouse? monitor?

thanks
