Hi

Just wondering what people usually bring to the house in the university

What is like the very essential things a student need to buy before enrolling into the dorm??

shower shoes

This is exactly why a forum like this would be useful:

Someone once said college students need two things: duct tape and a can of 3-in-One household oil. If it moves and it is not supposed to, use the duct tape; if it doesn't move and it is supposed to, use the oil.

The housing website tells you everything.

here are some tips

first of all, UIUC says that wifi routers aren't allowed, but this is just because (1) if everyone had them, the signals would interfere with one another and (2) UIUC isn't liable for non-students who sneak onto the network. in all honesty, having a wifi router in a dorm room is a nice thing, and your RA won't care. browsing the net on your bed > browsing net at your desk.

secondly, make sure you bring a huge bottle of all-purpose cleanser, and several paper towel rolls. you'll be surprised at how fast your dorm room will get messy. moreover, whenever you order food, you can use the towels as napkins, and to clean up.

make sure you bring your winter coat by early november. before then, it's too hot.

make sure you bring a pair of cheap flip-flops that you'll only wear in the shower (the showers are dirty).

bring an ethernet cable, otherwise you'll have to buy one from CITES.

bring a bottle full of various pills (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, pepto bismol, sudafed, etc.). you'll be surprised at how much it sucks when you're stuck in the dorms, sick, and you don't have pills.

bring some cheap lawn chairs or lounge chairs you can sit in.

it would be a good idea to bring cardboard boxes to put stuff on (last year, i put my printer, TV, synthesizer, and clothes on separate cardboard boxes. my room looked ghetto).

You must have had a good RA there Paerra, mine didn't take as kindly to the WiFi as yours did.

One suggestion, bring some simple tools like a hammer and a couple screwdrivers, maybe even some pliers. I had these and you wouldn't believe the times you end up needing them when you least expect it.
