Things to ask for Christmas for the aspiring electrical engineer/mathematician/astrophysicist

I’m really looking for some things to ask for that would help expand my knowledge in these areas for Christmas. In areas like electrical engineering, engineering, astrophysics, mathematics, and computer science.

I love self learning things, for example I’m reading Cosmos by Carl Sagan and I am going to read A Brief History of Time by Stephan Hawking to expand my knowledge on astrophysics. I also am self-learning the programming langauge Python at the current moment.

Any ideas was be appreciated! Thanks!

Ask for an ardiuno (check spelling) and some kits to make small robotics. Also learn welding. Check to see if there are any makerplaces in your area. If you live near Columbus- there is “The Foundry” which is like makerplace and you could ask to take classes there.

Thanks again @itsv. You’re a lifesaver, lol.

As an engineer, I want to remind you to have some fun along the way!

It seems we have quite a community of engineers on here!! @MaineLonghorn

That’s always nice to know. When I hit next year, I’m going to need some advice on engineering colleges. :))

I will move this to the engineering forum - you might get more ideas there.

I agree with the Arduino kit suggestion. Raspberry Pi might be a better option with Python under your belt.

For books, my son really liked this: https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Computing-Systems-Building-Principles/dp/0262640686, but he didn’t tackle it until he was pretty deep in his ME curriculum. It’s a commitment, but if you do it, you will have a DEEP understanding of how a computer works and a good insight into how data travels.

“The Beauty of Pi” by Strogatz

“How to Solve it”, by Polya.

My brother (in his 50s) is an engineer and just built his own 3D printer. He used a basic kit but he said not hard to to by getting parts.

Wow, thanks for the responses! I’ll look into it! Haha it’s a bit late to ask for these things, but I can get them with the money I asked for.

I totally misquoted the title though. It’s “The Joy of X” by Strogatz. Whoops.

The Arduino and Pi are really good suggestions. If they’re interested in circuit design, you may also want to get an FPGA development board. If not for the holidays, maybe down the road.

They’re definitely pricier ($100-$150), but you can do some really sick stuff with them if you’re willing to pick up Verilog/SystemVerilog or VHDL (I’d recommend SystemVerilog for beginners), and it can be really cool because you quite literally code hardware.

Radio shack sells basic soldering kits for $20 each. They are pretty fun. One is a mini amp another is a game. The soldering iron set was $10 and you can get as many kits as you like. There are over 40 to choose from

Thanks @boneh3ad @hungryteenager @10s4life!!! I got quite a bit of income for Christmas (lol). So I will definitely look into these suggestions as well!

I got several books for Christmas! My favorites are The Birth of a Theorem (Cedric Villani) and the Math Book (Clifford Pickover)! The former’s structured more like a novel whereas the latter is similar to trivia books (one topic per spread?). I’ve also heard great things about xkcd’s Thing Explainer, which looks interesting!

Ok thank you, I’ll look into those! @VaporeonKid
