thinking of going for a semester-long exchange in UIUC. is there anythg to do, like shopping, entertainment ard the school? Chambana seems feels like a college town..

In the middle of the corn field…

^ Surrounded by, not in the middle. Yes it is a great college town, where would you be exchanging from?

If a UIUC student wanted to see a movie on a big screen , where would he or she go to see it? Would one need to have a car to get to it?

Does UIUC have theater productions on campus? Are there plays held off campus? where? again, would a student need a car to get to the productions?

does UIUC have speakers over to the campus ?

You’d take a free bus to the movie theatre. Plays are on campus, mainly at Krannert. UIUC has many speakers and shows on campus. You don’t need a car at UIUC, and you’d pay a lot to park it quite far away from your dorm in most cases.

I could come as an exchange student, originally from London, can I have fun without the use of alcohol?

I am interested in this last question, too, and my son is from the suburbs of Chicago.

yes, you can have plenty of fun without alcohol. i’ve been here for 3 semesters and i haven’t touched a drink.

on campus: guest speakers, student organizations, volunteering, live music, coffee everywhere, campustown on green street with food and shopping, art museums, performances at the krannert and the assembly hall, arcade, ice skating, bowling, sport events, student plays… many times free/cheap

off campus: downtown champaign, downtown urbana, volunteering, movie theaters, karaoke in savoy, lincoln square mall in dt urbana, marketplace mall in champaign

c-u also hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year. urbana sweet corn festival, pygmalion music fest, laughing prairie dog festival, etc.

everything is accessible by bus, which runs fairly often and on time. the most common places to encounter drinking are at frats, house parties, and bars (duh), so just avoid those. there’s no pressure to drink to fit in.

there’s actually more to do here than in the suburbs because the community & university is actually active in creating events and everything’s easy to travel to. the people that complain that there’s nothing to do here just don’t get out enough.

thanks, zealain. good post.
