Over the summer I will be attending UGA and i've been looking through the website looking for things to do on my off time so I wanted to know some things I have to do while i'm there.

Also what dorms are available for the summer (interns)? Can u also describe them

Nething u guys can provide to make it a memorable experience please let me know....Thanks

Plenty of stuff to do in and around Athens:
- The State Botanical Gardens are just a mile and a half down the road from the University and have plenty of trails and gardens for a full day out.
- There's a sort of nature trail/zoo at Memorial Park which also had a nice network of trails and isn't far away from the university at all.
- Downtown Athens has plenty of restaurants and bars; you could make it a point to eat at a new one once a day and probably just finish by the end of the summer.
- The Classic Center near campus has lots of musicals and music events periodically throughout the summer
- On-campus there's the art museum (which I think might be closed now though) as well as the events they have at the music school. You can also go in the school's rare book and manuscript library which has plenty of neat things like a book made of human skin.
- Athens itself has some neat historic homes as well as oddities like the Tree that Owns Itself and a Double-Barreled Cannon. There's also a neat greenway system along the North Oconee River that leads through several parks.
- Of course, there's plenty of stuff to do in Atlanta and its environs (about 1-1.5 hours away) and if you drive north for 2 hours you'll get to the mountains.

Also neone no the most effective way to get to Athens...is there a major airport in Athens or will I have to fly to Atlanta and take a bus down. Pleaasseee help im sooooo confused

There is a small airport in Athens, but it's not exactly convenient to fly into. US Airways I think has a few flights into it via Charlotte and WingsAir has a $79/one-way shuttle from and to Atlanta. It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere though so it's not exactly convenient.

I would actually recommend the Greyhound bus- the bus station is right in the middle of downtown Athens and it costs only $20/one-way from the Atlanta station, which is right on the MARTA line. There's also a AAA airport shuttle, but that's $45/one-way.

yea i was thinking of flying to atl and taking the greyhound...or just taking the greyhound all the way there but i know thats not gonna b fun considering it will probably take 20 plus hrs

As far as the dorms go, I'm pretty sure the only two open for the summer are Reed and Payne. The other dorms might be open for summer camps and whatnot but not for UGA students. Check out the housing website (uga.edu/housing) for the details.

I've never been inside Reed or Payne, but I've heard Reed pretty nice.

The food's really really good. Assuming the summer meal plan works like the regular year meal plan, it's basically all you can eat any time of the day. They don't limit your number of visits, which is great because you can go in and eat lunch by yourself and then go again with a friend. Most of the dining halls are great except Bolton. They just have a smaller selection.

is there a theatre on campus..or walking distance from campus...also can u tell me ne places with in walking distance like a wal-mart..or ne type of grocery store

There is a theater on campus in the Tate Student center that shows movies fairly often at a reduced rate for students and a decent price for non-students. Most of these movies have just left theaters, but haven't come out on DVD yet.

There are a few convenience stores with basic supplies in downtown Athens, but the closest grocery store is probably a Kroger about a mile or so from campus. There are a lot of city buses though that run out down Atlanta Highway past Target and to Wal-Mart, so just study Athens Transit - Athens, Georgia and you should get a good idea of the bus routes.

The gym, Ramsey, is a pretty good place. I don't go there, so I'm not one to talk about it, but they've got plenty of things to do there for free. There's an indoor track, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a weight room, pools, and some other stuff. You do need to pay for the classes they offer though. And yes, even the students. You'll have to check the website for their summer schedule.

Are you only coming to Athens for the summer?
