Also does anyone know why the University chose to phase out fraternities and sororities?

The above link is from the SCU website and fully explains why and when the University discontinued support for the Greek System. Basically, there are less than 10% of the students who are in the Greek system at SCU. The University, at one point, provided some support to these. However, they made a decision to put their money into programs for all SCU students instead. There are still a few fraternities and sororities at SCU but they are off campus and are not supported any longer by the university.

Any thoughts on what there is to do on and around campus?

DD is a student at SCU. She says there is no shortage of things to do both on and off campus. She is busy all the time. There are many, many activities on campus, and events happening each weekend and many week nights. The greater San Jose area has a lot going on as well. She specifically chose a school where the social life did NOT revolve around sororities and fraternities...and she has not been disappointed. What exactly are you looking for? They have sports teams, concerts, arts events, clubs, speakers, intermurals, etc.

There are a lot of things to do in San Jose and a lot of things to do if you're willing to drive for an hour. In San Jose there is quite a lot to do. There is a great mall nearby and the downtown is great with a lot of good restaurants. Santa Clara has a page posted about great things to do in San Jose at http://www.scu.edu/ugrad/location/silicon-valley.cfm

About 40 minutes away is Santa Cruz. I love Santa Cruz. It is definitely worth the trip. It has a lot of great beaches. There are cute villages and stores. Downtown is great for a day of shopping. It is beautiful and a great way to spend the day. There is also the Boardwalk and events happening all the time.

San Francisco is very fun. The city is great with great restaurants, shops, China town, plays, art galleries. There is a lot to do here for a day.
