Things to know for Move In days

After sitting in traffic just to get home, these things come to mind:

  1. State and local police will be out and about, most notoriously between Harrisburg and State College, and on the main roads into town. You will get a ticket if you are speeding. Welcome!
  2. Everything is under construction. Everywhere. it's insane. Sidewalks, even. Pay attention to signs and detours. Plan to take forever. Smile.
  3. There is little to no parking for dorms. Think "parked temporarily at the curb, far from dorm, with a time limit" not " we'll have to hurry to get a spot". Seriously. The parking lots at East and North are either buildings now, or access is limited, or space is limited. This is no time to being extra stuff.

We are excited to welcome our part time residents to town  In all seriousness? Remind your student to LOOK before they cross the streets. I have lived here well over 25 years and every.single. fall. a student is seriously injured and a few killed simply because they walk into traffic.

Also, assaults are more common in the first month. Remind them that a dorm is not a house, and their door should be locked when they sleep.

We’ll help them when they are lost, give them money at the checkout, take them to the ER, and roll our eyes when they can’t use a crosswalk. But it’s awfully nice to see them all.

For real. I trust neither cars nor pedestrians in State College. I’ve seen students walk out into the road and put up a hand as if commanding the incoming car to magically stop for them in time.

I can’t tell you how many I have had to grab by the backpack to stop them from getting squished. Also, CATA buses. Don’t stand too darn close to a corner if one is tuening!
