what are those "little things" to pack that make your life easier at boarding school?

clothes hamper
tacks for hanging

laundry quarters

... a girl I know bought a doorbell for her door but she was living in a three-room single...
those hooks you can attach onto walls

Depending on the layout of the room, those risers that lift a bed up a foot or so are nice for storing more stuff under the beds. Stereo....

Boarding school will mail you a list which is pretty comprehensive.

the boarding school will send you a list. but bring a fan

pictures of your family!

what about clothes?

fxMom asked for "the little things." But yeah. Bring those too.

ask about whether or not you need laundry quarters. I know my school switched to cards and didn't tell us till we got here... I had 20 dollars worth of quarters.... llying in my room... useless

On our interview visit to SPS, we visited a few student rooms that were furnished with Salvation Army furniture (couch, lazyboy chairs, etc). Mind you, the items did not look crappy. Do other schools let students bring furniture items?

fxmom, middlesex lets you bring furniture. this is probably a given, unless the school provides a personal computer, you'll definately need one. lot's of writing inprep school.

most schools give a bed, desk, dresser, and you can bring a computer or a chair

Yeah, Andover and Exeter let you bring furniture too. People in my dorm have everything from futons to bookcases to love seats.

Are students allowed to have mini fridges in their dorms?

YEah, my mom wanted me to bring a fridge or microwave to my dorm. Thanks for telling me that we could bring furniture to Exeter. Are you allowed to even if you have a roommate?

Yes on the furniture.......better check the refrig + microwave...unless rules have been modified......both are a NO NO for Preps. Remember that these dorms are ancient....nicely kept up but ancient. Fan to start a fan is good.

fxmom:

School will send you a one-page list, which is pretty good in helping you what to bring to school. Most schools provide a bed, desk, dresser, and a chair. If one is prefect “mostly 11th grader or higher” they can have mini fridge in their room. Every dorm is equipped with a microwave and a fridge. As school cafeteria is closed after 6:30 PM, school provides a snack of popcorn, bagel, bread, chips and peanut butter in your dorm. In addition, kids can group and can order food on weekends. Weekdays are very hectic as you have school, then sports, choir or orchestra, clubs, and then study hours. It is very time demanding environment. In addition, if your kid like provide them a cell phone.

Keep cool, keep in touch, order in food for late nites, tunes!! Everything else you can order online after you determine the must haves for your particular school!! All schools accept next day deliveries and there are many of them. Shoes+outwear+fashions!! It is all just so easy...don't stress.
