I love Chuys. Terrific chile rellenos. Gosh, it's been ages since I've had one.

The cool thing about SXSW (unless this has changed of late) is that if you don't buy tickets to the official events, there is still music EVERYWHERE....someone playing something in every doorway.

Has anyone mentioned the bats?

And where should they eat breakfast? Is Trudy's still the place?

Also, for a great music event ;)

Austin City Limits in the fall:

Austin City Limits Music Festival : September 26-28, 2008 : Austin, TX : Zilker Park

3 day music festival that features everything from HUGE acts (like Foo Fighters, Beck, etc.) to Texas Country (Robert Earle Keen, Lucinda Williams, etc.) to small folkies (Patty Griffin, Iron & Wine, etc.)

It's a great time!!

Everyone should go back in time to Dirty's, a true hamburger joint (and drive-in) which has been at the same place in Austin since 1926. My Dada ate there in law school in 1930. I ate --errr, drank there regularly in 1970. And I went there for lunch just the other day while in Austin for a CLE seminar.

Dirty Martins Kum-Bak Place - Austin TX - About Us

The bats are available for watching FOR FREE at the bridge at Congress and 1st Street (aka Cesar Chavez)

missy, come see me and I'll take you to Chuy's. ;) I prefer the Big As Yo' Face Burrito.

I prefer Kerbey Lane or Austin Java for breakfast.

So, are you sold? Austin rocks. :D

For breakfast, I like to go to Kerby Lane - the blueberry pancakes are to die for (and worth busting the diet for). There's one right on Guadalupe across from campus.

I love Dirty's!! Great burgers!!

Youdon'say, we cross posted - Isnt' Kerby Lane DELISH!!!!

Breakfast??? Joe's Bakery.

Early March is usually too early for the bats, but late August is truly awesome.

In all my time here, I've never been to Dirty's. Must go soon.

Another long time favorite for Texas BBQ-- Salt Lick

The Salt Lick

And I need to try Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop - what a history!!

this is fun getting new suggestions for Austin restaurants!!

Okay, I'm getting hungry now!! And all I planned for dinner is meat loaf!!!

Has Las Manitas found a new location? If not, Austin has lost another true local restaurant landmark.

I can't believe the wealth of info here!! Awesome; I'm making a Word doc of it all. Son is really into the music thing. After hearing all this, some of his friends might like to come along....

Hopefully Alabama has something comparable to offer (it's the nearly free option!!).

Thanks so much!!!!!

SoCo (South Congress) Neighborhood in Austin | Small Planet Guide

People have already mentioned the restaurants we usually go to - Hula Hut's and Chuy's (love those margarita's). 6th Street of course is good for walking up and down.

Last time we visited my sister took us to the newly trendy South Congress area with some cute shops and restaurants. We ate at Guero's which is supposedly known for celebrity sightings. Not sure if your son would like it but above is a link with more information.

You can always cruise the "drag" on Guadalupe Street next to campus. The Student Union has the Cactus Cafe (Tickets - Cactus Cafe - The Texas Union at the University of Texas) which has concerts although I have to say the Union was kind of dead last time I walked through at night. You can pick up a copy of the Austin Chronicle newspaper for concert and entertainment listings.

Austin is a really fun city and I'm sure your son will like it. My only complaint is that I always get stuck in traffic when we visit. The city has really grown but the infrastructure hasn't really kept up. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Likes warm weather? Well, check out the cool (huge) City Park, its natural spring city pool and fun stuff on the river(s). How about:

Hamilton's Pool?

Hamilton Pool

Or Barton Springs?

City of Austin - Parks and Recreation Department: Barton Springs

And, generally, all the stuff at Zilker Park --March 1st Kite Festival

Unless you are in a time crunch, Kerbey Lane for Monday morning breakfast. Or do like the kids do and go to a concert Sunday night and then go to Kerbey Lane late late. They are always open. The food is eclectic (although pancakes are #1) and delicious.

My daughter and her friends really love Hula Hut too. In October we all visited my D (me, MidwestDad_ and MidwestSon_). We had a family outing to Hula Hut with her roommate and her best friend and we had a family breakfast at Kerbey Lane. Her top two choices.

I would definitely stay away from 6th street- it is just dirty and ick. Barton Springs road which has restaurant row (including shady grove and chuys) is a definite yes! Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin Blvd is also a nice Austin tradition. You can wander from there down to the lake to walk off all the calories. :) Magnolia Cafe has a sign up that says "Sorry, we're open" and they are - 24/7.

Has anyone mentioned Amy's ice cream in Austin?
