A few months ago I was said on this board that it is OK and even advisable to start random conversations with other students at college, but what I was wondering about is what I should talk about with them.
P.S. sorry if the question seems odd to you, but I am an international student, perfectly aware that such talks are different in any given culture.

K...well just ask questions to get to know the person...learn about them - always ask questions, don't talk about yourself..people love talking about themselves so ask questions and follow up w/ questions related to what they respond w/...its basic socializing.

Since you're international you can start a convo by asking where the person is from...and ask questions about it. After a few minutes you should find some common interests or similarities and thats when you start vibing w/ them and bam the ice is broken and both are comfortable talkin to each other. Thats all it is...just ask whatever is on your mind, don't hold back.

Talk about your college - everyone will have something to say. Ask about their majors, why they chose the college, how far the trip is from their home, etc. Also, summer has just passed. People will want to talk about what they did!

music is a good start.

at the beginning of school:
where are you from?
do you like school so far (if theyre a freshman)?
have u been to any good parties yet?

if the school has any big events/sports games coming up, ask if they are going.
are you in a frat/sor.?
are you in any clubs/sports?
talk about new music/tv/movies

hope this helps. good luck. remember...be confident but be yourself.

You can't go wrong by asking about their majors and career intentions. Very common, very easy way to start a conversation.
