S has been admitted to MSU and plans to study microbiology at Lyman-Briggs . I've been reading MSU threads here and elsewhere and it is clear that people have a lot of good things to say about the school in general and Lyman-Briggs in particular. What I'd like to know is what would you change about MSU and Briggs if you could? A second question I have is about the MSU budget situation. Is the state now and in the foreseeable future cutting funding. If yes, how is that impacting the school and Lyman-Briggs? Thank you.

The residential colleges are pretty well off even with the budget cuts - I’m pretty sure there are not going to be any noticeable alterations to the curriculum and quality of education. In terms of the overall school, I think MSU has handled budget cuts relatively well. A few majors are being cut (ie. communicative sciences & disorders, american studies etc) but that is the only noticeable impact I’ve noticed recently as a student. Tuition always goes up, but not at unmanageably high levels. And when the promise scholarship got cut in Michigan, MSU financial aid covered the scholarship amount for its students for at least one semester.

What would I change about MSU in general? Hmm…parking availability stinks. Lyman briggs = living in holmes 1st year = holmes food is bad (in comparison to most other dorms). I wish MSU had a slightly better overall academic reputation, but that hasn’t affected me on an individual basis (especially since I love my major/being in james madison). I also wish it was warmer, weather-wise (but generally MSU weather is more pleasant than what I’m used to anyways). There are not really any other negatives for me…
