I'm looking into THINK Global School, but I can't seem to find a lot of information on it. My parents aren't even willing to consider letting me go to a school they don't know much about. Does anyone here go to TGS or know much about it?

Here’s a thread about TGS started this spring. You’ll see my 2 cents toward the end.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/1133808-think-global-school.html

The thing is there just isn’t that much information about it. It’s a relatively new school that doesn’t have accreditation yet, so its hard to tell.

I think it takes a real leap of faith to allow a program to have custody of a minor child with so little track record, no accreditation, and enormously high cost. The students travel to each foreign country at parent expense with no traveling companion. Even the bios of the faculty inspire little confidence.

I hope this program works - I really do. Everyone starts somewhere. But there seems to be no independent analysis of the program and all the websites and glowing reviews are generated by the company.

In the corporate world that would scream “RED FLAG.” Good concept but not yet good execution.

Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware.

I think it would be an amazing opportunity, but I think you are right to be wary. It has yet to prove itself.

Just browsing the website, I’ve found a lot of things that turn me off. The teaching staff is very low, and none of the teachers seem to be that well-qualified. Same with the Board of Directors. I understand the need to keep the school body down–travel is expensive, but I’m just not seeing how the school can keep the teaching patterns if they are, in reality, attending three different schools a year.

Also, according to Boarding School Review, it has a yearly price tag of $125,000, but only gives an average of $50,000 in FA. Also, 70% of the student body (10-11 of the 15 students) are on FA. Now, don’t get me wrong, $50,000 is a lot of money, it’s more than a full scholarship for the average boarding school (according to Boarding School Review), but when compared to that $125,000 price tag, that’s not really that much. Families would still have to come up with $75,000 a year, plus travel expenses.

I think it’s a good idea, but there are still a lot of kinks to be worked out. If it’s still around when it comes time for my kids to decide if they want to go to boarding school, and it’s gotten its kinks worked out, then I’d consider it.

It occurred to me that other than a few grants, the “true” cost of the program might just be the $75,000 that is left over. I’ve worked in corporate America long enough to know that a sale is not often what it seems and that a “sale” price still leaves many companies with a hefty profit over the actual cost of services rendered.

Be interested in seeing their annual report and IRS filings. That would give a lot of clues as to the legitimacy.
