Think I can get in?

So my GPA is 3.91/4 while my weighted is 4.44/5. I got a 30 on my ACT and I'm in the top 10% of my class. I'm not sure if extra curriculars matter, but I did stage crew (theater) for 3 years and was in leadership positions, I have a job, have played the piano for 10 years, was in chorus for 2 years and I am a tutor. I'm going to take the ACT again and try to do better, but what are my chances to get into engineering at U of I. If not Engineering, what about LAS (Liberal Arts).

I specifically would like to do either aerospace engineering or computer engineering.

Thanks.

i think you got a good chance of getting in

you’re solid for LAS but not sure about engineering. getting that ACT up even just 1 or 2 points would help a lot.

side note that might help any random reader: as most people know, the two most competitive schools at uiuc for admissions are business and engineering, but in different ways. business tends to look at the whole applicant in a few different ways. they really value the essays. conversely, test scores/grades are very important for engineering, which is why i stressed that the OP’s chances would be helped greatly even by only a slight ACT increase despite all his EC involvement. given all that, id say he has a better shot at business right now, whereas a poster with great grades/scores and not as great ecs would have a better shot at engineering. just thought that could help any juniors or younger out there thinking about where to apply.

ACT is borderline low for Engineering. GPA and ECs look good. What was your math subscore? They look at that in particular for engineering, I understand. LAS, depending on the program, hard sciences are tougher, is probably a match.

Math subscore was a 31.

OK, well as it stands now you’d be in the lower end of the mid 50% of applicants admitted to engineering, so I’d try to get that act composite up a point or two and try to get the math up to a 32-33, then you’re golden.

You are in for LAS and like others have said you should retake the ACT and get that up a few points to make sure you are good for engineering. Good luck.

I think you have a perfectly good chance of getting into the engineering program. I got into it with a 3.0/4.0 GPA, 31 ACT with a math sub score of 33, lousy essays, and very few extracurriculars. If I can get in, so can you

ya dont worry ur in

sure you can! I have been not even two years in US; started american high school as a junior. I had 25 from ACT, 4.18 GPA, unweighted, a few extracurricular activities. I got admitted into U of I engineering college, computer science  so no worries

So I retook the ACT and got a 31, but the same math subscore (31). I’m taking it one last time with the PSAE so I’ll see if I can get a 32 on that.

Good chance, school does not weight ones residency.
If your applying for engineering I say decent chance.

I’d say you’ve got solid stats for admission to engineering. Try to get that Math Subscore up a bit. Have you taken a rigorous courseload? They check what courses you’ve taken against what was able to be taken to see whether you’ve padded your GPA with Home Economics-type courses. Lastly, don’t blow off the essays.

Ya, I’ve been in all honors classes (except english). Took AP Psych last year and I’m taking AP Calc BC, AP Stats, AP Physics C and AP french next year.
