Thinking about a second bachelors in CS. Advice needed!

Hello,

I am thinking about obtaining a second bachelors in CS. I have always wanted to do something with computers or engineering, but majored in Risk Management and Insurance during my undergrad. I have been working as an underwriter for 4 years and know that this is not something I want to do for the rest of my life.

I am 26 about to turn 27 and want to go back starting in the fall. Should take me about two years to complete my undergrad. Has anyone done this? I’d like some advice to see if the move makes sense.
I am currently studying to take the pre calc entrance exam and feel that I am already at a disadvantage due to the amount of time I have been out of school.

Going back to a second bachelors is probably overkill. Three or four programming classes should be all you need for a foot in the door to programming jobs.

Probably dozens of universities like UC Berkeley and UCLA offer online software development programs that you should check into.

Thank you for the reply. A few schools around me offer certificate programs, but I am worried that it will not be enough to get my foot in the door. Looking through various programing/ computer engineering jobs it looks like there are a lot of requirements over what I can expect to learn in the certificate program.
I was hoping at first to just take a certificate program at a local school and get my foot in the door and move up from there as it would save time and $$.

Go for a software engineering Masters degree or one in Data Science/Analytics. Lots of schools will take students with non-CS degrees and just make them take a few prerequisite courses to get up to speed. It sounds like you probably have a decent background in mathematics and that will help a lot in getting admission.

Pretty easy answer - hell no to 2nd bach. I had an undergrad in psychology, and was eventually accepted into a CS masters program. Of course, I did a ton of pre-req’s…You get no fin. aid with 2nd bach, and most schools will not even consider you.

It’s pretty crazy for me to believe, but I will graduate with no student debt. Got financial aid to pay for about 85% of my entire masters program (two years worth of graduate tuition). Would never happen with 2nd bach.

I have the same idea as you and I’m thinking about pursuing a second bachelor degree in CS. Would you mind to talk with me? I’m kind of confused now and wondering what should I do…

How many pre reqs did you have to take prior to entering the program? Did you feel like you were at a disadvantage in the program because you did not have an undergrad in it.
I would love to be able to do a masters program and skip the bachelors if it is possible.

Anyone have any other ideas? Looking for alternate ideas to a second bachelors.
