Thinking About An Online Masters or Graduate Certificate In Computer Science

Hello everyone,

I have been looking around and noticed that many well known schools in CS: Berkley, Stanford, Columbia, Illinois, Georgia Tech, and Purdue to name a few are offering masters degrees in computer science. Or I could go to a local college and be on campus at University of Kentucky or Louisville and pay less. At this point, I am looking at getting into data science, working for a startup or possibly getting a Ph.D at some point among other things.

So, would it be better to get my degree online from a "prestigious" school? Or should I go for my graduate education at my local Universities? Which, I know both departments and both are pretty decent--just not as nationally known as the schools listed above.

If you are thinking of going on to a phD you need to be doing a research based MS. I think you would benefit more from doing that in person where you can work on projects with your profs. I think those online programs are intended as terminal degrees for professional advancement, but I could be wrong. You might do some reading on Quora about recommendations to get into data science.

@BrownParent‌ : thank you for that.
