Thinking about dropping out and joining the army?

I have to have family that’s been personally victimized by the war to speak against it? That’s the worst argument I’ve heard yet.

That’s not the point I was trying to make. I was just saying, you obviously care about nothing but putting the military down due to your personal bias. Whereas there are people who have been personally victimized by the war and yet still manage to support the troops fighting it.

I can only imagine what that kind of loss is like. No one should have to lose a loved one who’s so young.

The point is that you can support the troops without supporting the war.

If the troops were being drafted and behaving well, that would be my position.

Why does that matter? Are you saying the people who voluntarily joined the armed forces don’t deserve your respect?

That’s what I’ve been saying. The ones I do respect are those who have spoken out against the war and the military after their service.

That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.

no, they died doing everything possible to accomplish the mission.

I think you were trying to be deep and philosophical here… but I think you failed.

LeviG–It must be nice to be young and know it all. Live a bit more of your life and gain a better understanding of the world, politics, and society before you stand on the top rung of the ladder and cast your disdain down towards others. I’ll give you some slack because of your youth and lack of knowledge of the way the world works.

For all that you proclaim–lack of respect for those in the military as if they enjoy being put into the position of pulling the trigger and taking a life. You don’t understand anything about what it’s like to be a soldier. Please, think before you speak.

I’ve been following this thread and trying very hard to stay away from it. Your last post tucked at me and I had to respond.

Even after reading how Jordan gave his life to protect >50 of his fellow Marines along with the Iraqi military personnel that our troops are training, you’ll find some sarcastic comment to make about the military. Yes, you have a right to your opinion. With this right, comes responsibility on how you express your opinion.

Jordan–RIP. You will live forever in our hearts.

maybe it’s time for this thread to dissolve. To those that want it to end, stop posting and it will go away in a day or two.

No offense… but can you list the positives that the UN has accomplished? It is a dysfunctional body. Please rate their actions on the following situations:

Starving populations and human rights violations in North Korea

Significant human rights violations in China

Darfur

Tibet

Kashmir

Nuclear proliferation

Palestinian issue

the Desaparecidos in Argentina

Srebrenica

… I could go on, but I will wait for your response on those first.

nysmile, even I can’t deny that was incredibly brave and heroic. I’m not young enough to believe that everyone in a given organization is identical. I hope you’re mature enough to understand that I respect him for his bravery, not his choice of joining the military.

I had a feeling someone would bring this up. If the US wants to break the UN’s laws, it should leave the UN.

In the SPANISH CIVIL WAR???

the military is consistently meeting its recruitment goals

please site the broken law.

I am not a UN expert. Kofi Annan is:

[BBC NEWS | Middle East | Iraq war illegal, says Annan](BBC NEWS | Middle East | Iraq war illegal, says Annan)

If so, I am really surprised. Economy’s that bad, I guess.

It must be nice to insult everyone in the U.S. Army behind the safety of your computer screen. Try being in Iraq and being shot at for extended periods of time, I bet you’d go crazy and rape someone too, LeviG (not that that’s a ground for raping someone).

OORAH (10 dead iraqis)

What did the UN do on his watch that makes him an expert?

Umm, we did this once before, then the rest of the world that agreed with your line of thinking started whining and another World War broke out. Would you like a repeat? I can hear all the countries of the world now that are conveniently ignoring poor parts of Somalia, Darfur, Haiti, China, India, Rwanda, etc. suddenly blaming us for leaving and THAT’S the real reason they haven’t been able to get to accomplishing anything for the past 10-20 years. I’m sure of it UN.

No. While true many join for money, you can always join the national guard, reserves, navy or air force and have a far lower chance of being thrown onto the battlefield. Again, while those who are that fearful and cling to your comfortable lives so much that you can’t understand the reasons people would lay down their lives for a cause, maybe one day you’ll find some direction that will give you some real conviction, not faux confidence based on judging others.

As it is now the only thing keeping the UN in their de facto position is the US and its army, besides that the UN is a joke. Iran and NK both laugh them off, and for some reason after a successful Gulf campaign showing the benefits of multilateral institutions using a combination of soft and hard power, the rest of the world decided to let us solo all of their problems.

You’re posts have the subtleties of hailing the UN and similar institutions as some type of bastion for peace and the apex of multilateral cooperation. In all actuality, the UN isn’t even willing to step in and help poor, impoverished nations, and prevent even smaller crises’ like when we had to go into Port au Price, though we had alternate reasons for that too.
