I got accepted and I’m super excited but being from San Diego, CA I’m a little apprehensive. So I’ve got a couple questions:
- What’s the weather like?
- What is the town like? I know it’s small so what do you do on the weekends.
- If you know, what is their Animal Science program/major like?
- Where should I apply for housing? Also is housing on a rolling basis?
Oh I never see anything about WSU on CC! Congrats on your acceptance!
- We have all 4 seasons in Pullman, with a hot, dry summer, a (typically) cold, snowy winter, and a short, mild fall and spring. This year, however, we've only had about 4-6 inches of snow TOTAL (most of which was back in November) and it's been rather mild.
- Pullman is small, but it's 1.5 hours to Spokane and 1 hour to Lewiston, ID/Clarkston, WA. Between Pullman and the neighboring college town of Moscow, there's a bowling alley, ice rink, small mall, LOTS of restaurants, etc. There's good hiking nearby, and skiing a bit further away. We have an outdoor rec center that schedules trips all the time if you're outdoorsy.
- I'm not in Animal Science, but the major is great. It's one of the bigger draws for students here (the other big majors being communications and the agricultural/food science majors). It's a big program. We're sort of the UC Davis of Washington, for comparison. That's really all I know, so hopefully there's an Animal Sci major lurking about on here, or you can contact the department.
- If you're a single, undergrad student under 20, you have to live on campus (state law). I live in one of the all-female dorms and I love it, but it is rather old. If you can swing it financially you can try to be placed in one of the newer dorms, but they have very limited space, especially if you haven't yet applied. Check out the housing website to see the bajillion options. Housing is on a rolling basis in the sense that you are placed depending on when you apply, BUT all new students find out their placement at the same time.
Let me know if you have any more questions! I’d be happy to help. Go Cougs!
@CheerOutLoud WOW! Thank you so much for all this great information!! I’m looking to visit in early April and really get a feel for the campus (pretty excited). The housing is the only thing I was worried about b/c I don’t know if I’m gonna accept yet and I don’t wanna get bad housing if I commit in like a month:/
What are the Athletics like? I know the school is in PAC 12 so what are the games like (especially football)? My highscool doesn’t have a football team so havung one in college is definetly a plus:)
@claudia318 Definitely try to get your visit scheduled through the destination program. There’s one on April 18th that’s still open. You learn about a lot of the resources on campus and you get a renewable $1000 scholarship (regardless of whether or not you’ve committed yet).
I really don’t think there are any BAD dorms, just ones that are older and ones that are newer. And there are always wait lists for the halls (I know a lot of people who were able to move into a newer hall after first semester).
As far as athletics… The energy is GREAT. The student section is ALWAYS packed. We have a student spirit organization called the ZZU CRU, which you are automatically a part of if you buy a sports pass (gets you into any athletic event on campus all year, for about the cost of three individual football games). Winning, on the other hand, is something we’re working on, but there’s a new basketball coach this year who seems to be putting a lot of effort into turning things around for them. For football, most of the coaching staff got fired last year, and the general expectation is for the head coach to be on the way out if next season is lousy… But hey, we nearly beat Oregon! For me, the energy does make up for the lousy records.
@CheerOutLoud I’m basically committed but I still need to visit just to see the school. I love how beautiful the campus is (from what I’ve seen in pictures), the small size of the town, and the natural surroundings! Thanks for responding in such great detail you definetly helped encourage me towards choosing WSU, GO COUGS!
