Thinking about majoring in accounting?

Don't.
How Church's Chicken Outsourced Its Accounting to India
Mindless bean counters, please, don't do something just for the money (especially when you'd be basically boned in that regard anyway according to this article).
Do something you love; and if you are passionate enough about it, you will be successful.

-Josh (Music Therapy Major)

You are basing your conclusion off one article? Let’s make this clear, as easy and boring as accounting is, it’s making me good easy money. A lot more than most people my age.

^^ Exactly. Not to mention the versatility and somewhat always in demand aspect of it. there comes a time to accept that "following your dreams isn’t always going to put food on the table. you don’t have to LOVE your job. as long as you don’t absolutely hate it youll be ok. I’d rather make enough money to enjoy my outside life than love my job and be struggling to make ends meet.

^^Can you provide data on your theory that people who “love their job” are “struggling to make ends meet”?

I’m not saying it happens to everyone. There are plenty of people who love their job that are making good money and are enjoying everything about their life. More power to them.

For the longest time I’ve wanted to be a baseball writer/analyst/play-by-play commentator. I know more about baseball than anyone I know, and absolutely love talking about it. However, I can’t go out into the workforce hoping and praying that one day I get discovered enough as writer to make a good living. I know that if you don’t try you can never succeed, but I just can’t commit my whole life to that. Again, those who do it and succeed, I’m very happy for them, and envy their bravery.

But I have to look for something that is going to give me stability in life and not something thats hit or miss. Some people disagree with that notion, which is fine, and I hope that everything works for them. But some people agree with me that, and would rather have security and decent money, so that when they go home to their family they know everything is ok. I have no data, thats just my opinion.

^So basically you’re a coward?

Does my choice to pursue financial security offend you for some reason? I don’t get it I was told to check this site out for the information and advice on it, but apart from a few people it seems like the only purpose of this website is for people to tell others why they are right and you are wrong.

Music therapy major?

Tell us in 5 years if you are actually doing what you love.

The major you love =/= a job you love.

The world is full of people who had more fun in college than accountants, nurses, or engineers who are bagging groceries. I’d much rather be paid decently for a job I don’t like than paid slave wages for a different job I also don’t like.

Be more realistic college kids. I’m going to enjoy seeing some of you guys struggling to find employment.

No, basically you are mature and preparing for you future.

As an academic advisor, it is amazing to me how many students want to major in fields w/ no jobs or very, very difficult to get into jobs.

Yes a degree is a benefit. But some majors, and schools are more of a benefit than others.

Go for your love. But if you need to support yourself otherwise, congratulations are also in order.

Thank you jonahrubin, Dawgie, and morrismm for backing me up on what i thought was logical thinking

20 bucks says musicjosh is in the unemployment line within 5 years.

Agreed, sucker. Pretending he knows what its like out there.

soo is majoring in accounting still safe?

I agree with this post.

^ exactly… major i love=sports management… job prospect? odds of being a general manager? lets get real. I need to support a family, not play around with my life

^^Do you even have a family yet? If not, why are you even worried about supporting a family? Living in the future is great for your stress level. Keep it up!

If I spent my college days worrying about supporting a family I would have missed everything college has to offer.

Im not “worrying” about it. im not sitting in my classes thinking “wow im so ‘worried’ about my future family.” however, im not an idiot and im not gonna take all joke classes so i can have fun in every aspect of college. i go out and stuff with my friends, but i also know im here to learn and get a degree so im not broke when im older. if you think im foolish for planning for my future, that says something about you

lol I love to laugh at the ones who are thinking about “supporting their family” so early on.

Oh man.

That just cracks me up.

FYI. Worrying about a family is dumb. Life is never how you plan it. Facts of life.

Very good putting my comment about planning for a family into a broad category of considering your future. Considering YOUR future is smart. When you are barely even in college and you are planning how you will have to support others you have messed up prioritie.
