Thinking About Taking Semester Off

I'm wanting to take the spring semister off, but am worried people will think I'm lazy for doing it.

I'm currently taking classes, and am working hard to get everything done. Before college I worked hard in school, and a lot of extra work that I don't think many kids had to do. This past summer my parents kept riding me about college, and I had hardly any free time because of it. Whenever I did, the things that still needed to be done would hang in the back of my head.

I realize things happen for a reason, and I think this semester in school has given me a lot. I've made some new friends, know what college life is like, and have beaten the anxiety I was feeling about going.

I don't feel like another semester will give me any of that, and think some time off would ease the stress I've been feeling since graduating. Plus theres people I know that are my age and still in high school. So I really don't see how taking the semister off being the age I am could be negative.

If I take the time off I would be thinking about what I'm going to do in life (career, etc.) I go to a class that isn't school, and would still be attending. I'd also still be doing chores and errands for my parents. I don't have an actual job, but have ways of making money (selling online)

With all of this said, would I be lazy for taking the next semister off? and is it a good idea?

No, not lazy. It’s a good idea to take a break if you’re burnt out imo.

It might not ease off the stress as much as you’d like it to. Withdrawing for a semester is a little bit different from taking a gap semester/year. Keep some things in mind:

If you have loans taken out, you may have to start paying them back for a while.

You should check your housing contract. You may not be guaranteed on-campus housing anymore after your break.

If you’re in a major with a rather rigid 4-year course plan (i.e. engineering), you may end up a course behind friends/study groups and stuck in a class where social circles have already formed
^^^THIS one royally sucks.

There may be some fees that you need to pay for terminating XXXX contract halfway through the year.

I’m iffy on those who want to take semesters off because I have seen so many people take a break, only end up to never going back to school for various reasons. Although I understand the need for a break, sometimes people get stuck in a routine (ie; they get a good job during their break) and end up staying out of school for years – and then they hit an age where they think it’s “too late” and just give up on the idea of getting a degree.

With that said, I don’t think anyone will view you as lazy. I think people will understand that you need to think about your future and delaying college can really help a person out. But are you like 110% sure you’ll go back? Your post is very vague on why exactly you want to take a break besides thinking about what to do in life and how you’re working hard+having an extra workload compared to other students. It sounds like you’re a freshman? Correct me if I’m wrong. But if this is the case, a lot of students in your position are lost and have no idea what they want to do career wise, so you’re not alone.

I’m not sold on your reasons for taking a semester off as much as I have seen other poster’s, but again, your post just seemed vague to me. I’d hate to see a hard-working person take a break and end up never getting the degree they planned to just because.
