I'm currently attending Occidental college. I was planning to major in biology or math, but now I think that nursing school would be a great choice for me (Occidental college does not have a nursing program by the way). I was wondering if there was any way that I could finish as a bio major and then apply to nursing school or if I should just focus on meeting pre-nursing requirements. Also, if I start up taking bio classes, once I transfer can I still get a major in biology from UCLA and get a Bachelor's degree in nursing? Or is that really unnecessary? I was also wondering what my GPA would need to look like before I applied. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You might also want to post your questions on the Nursing Major forum.

Go to the website for the UCLA nursing program. They give the details of the program. Basically they answer your questions. Since you live in the LA area you ought to try to attend one of their info sessions which they hold thru the year.

If you are seriously interested in nursing then you should download the app from UCLA and from other schools to see what they look for. Its not just GPA, they also give a lot of weight to experience and recs among other things. By knowing what they look for you can start now to make sure you have strengths in those areas.

Keep in mind that competition for admission is quite strong (at UCLA and at other schools offering nursing). According to mssun, a frequent contributor here, “Transfer: Nursing admitted 10 out of 160 applicants so that is about a 6.25% admit rate.” I don’t know if they give preference to CCC applicants who transfer in over those from 4-year schools but it is something you might want to look into.
