You are an undergraduate student wanting to take courses over the summer. You want to learn from the best. You get accepted into Yale Summer Session. Hooray! You want to go, but you are crunched for money and see that it’s MUCH cheaper to live off campus… so you find a sublet close to campus and set up shop.
So what’s the problem? Other than tutoring for some subjects, Yale offers NO SUPPORT for off-campus students.
- Those events that were promised to Yale Summer Students? You can’t be a part of.
- Want to purchase the meal plan but not the housing plan? You can’t access the dining hall without someone else’s company.
- Want to know where to get decently-priced groceries, where to do laundry, or where to print out papers? Figure it out yourself.
- Want ANY sense of community involvement, someone to talk to when you’re stressed, or god forbid any mental health services? Yale provides NOTHING to off-campus students.
You get your ID, maybe a map of where your class(es) is, then you’re on your own. And when you go to the obscurely-located office to drop every course you signed up for, they don’t ask for any explanation. No desire whatsoever to improve their program. So if you want to take summer courses and save money living off campus, either go local or go somewhere you are already familiar with. Go somewhere you already have support at because Yale provides no non-academic support whatsoever.
