Thinking ChE Biochem and honors..

Hello to all who dwell in College Confidential. This place has been a huge help to me in get in to college, and now I ask again for your help.

Currently (or rather, will be in the fall) enrolled in University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Right now, I am enrolled in the CoE with a tentative major in ChE. Because I will be coming in with many AP credits and retro-credits for foreign language, I will have somewhere around 50 creds to start off my freshman year, so I was planning on double majoring also with Biochemistry with prospects of attending medical school and there seem to be some overlaps between the two majors. Recently I just found out about the honors in major program, though I do not know much about it, so if anyone can explain it a little clearer to me, that would be much appreciated.

Anyways, I am extremely interested in this honors in major program, and was wondering, just wondering (maybe), given my situation, if (1) double major in ChE and Biochem is possible, and (2) if an honors major in one (or maybe both? grin) would be possible, all within 4 years period.

Thanks so much for all of your help!

To be honest, if your goal is medical school, I would recommend against majoring in chemical engineering altogether, unless you’re confident you can get the grades you need to get into medical school, as well as being a masochist who enjoys inflicting unnecessary pain on yourself (as opposed to the other apparent definitions of “masochist”).

There are overlaps (Organic, Physical & General Chemistry) but it’s going to be tough to focus on both majors. Also, it’s going to a bit confusing (I think) to think about Chemistry in a biological sense and chemistry in an applied/engineering sense. You’ll have two diff. mind sets and wouldn’t you rather be stronger in one area? Narrow > Wide knowledge usually.

oh okay…I initially chose ChE because I was pretty interested in chemistry, am fairly good at math as well. Biochem did come to mind, but that was almost every other medical school applicant’s major, and they told me it’s better to diversify - afterall, your B.S. won’t really affect your chances for medical school, besides for grades, as you’ve mentioned.

Do you guys know anything about the honors majors?
