Thinking of becoming a math teacher but I majored in accounting?

Hello everyone. I hope you all are doing well. I graduated back in 2016 with a degree in accounting. I then started my business and things went alright. However, my sister is a teacher, and i have been a volunteer teaching at my church. I really do enjoy teaching. I wanted to know what would be the best way for me to become a math teacher? I am currently trying to sign up for some teacher assistant jobs, hopefully i get in. While doing that, i plan to retake a few math courses to refresh my memory. Then study to get certified for the math 7-12 certification. However, i am worried that i wont be able to find a job since i did not major in math. What do you guys suggest? (Currently, i do not want to get into a Master’s program-just a personal preference)

Try subbing for a while, first. Volunteer teaching at church is very different from being a public school middle / high school teacher.

Some states, including NY, have pathways for people with non-traditional backgrounds. One of my sons had a math teacher who had worked at IBM for about 20 years before retiring and attending a program that trained and certified math teachers. In NY, all teachers have to obtain a masters degree within a certain amount of time after they begin teaching.

Check with your state’s licensing board.

Another thing is that many schools offer accounting and bookkeeping courses in the business department, so you might be able to get certified to teach those classes.

I don’t know where you live, but if you don’t mind living in NYC I would look into NYC Teaching Fellows. You will be on the DOE salary and with a roommate should be able to find a place to live and pay your bills. I think other cities have similar programs.
