School started yesterday, and I think I'm way out of my league for AP Lit.

I've never even been in an honors English class. Freshman year I was in college prep, and sophomore and junior years I was in accelerated classes (didn't take AP Lang last year).

Last year, I basically begged my teacher to recommend me for AP, since it's good for college admissions. But after two mind numbing classes, I'm lost.

I'm not an English person! I like big plots with a sprinkling of symbolism, not the other way around! I don't know if I can analyse text as well as needed for the class, since I really can't take "oh the fire represents x, x, and x, which is related to y because of z and q" seriously.

Is this just beginning of the year nerves? Would it look horrible if I dropped down to accelerated? I'm thinking that I have to take the class at some point, since it's required in college. Thoughts please.

Are you not an English person because you don’t like it or because you’re not good at it? I’m aware that those two can be correlated, but you get my point.

If your grade is not below an 80, you should not drop the class. If I were you, I would also change my attitude towards the class. Maybe it’s because you see English in such a black and white perspective and through such a narrow filter,
you’re not maxing out on the benefits of the class. English Literature encompasses over so many different time periods, writers, styles of writing, etc., it’s ridiculous to class and analyze pieces as if they are all the same.

Don’t like English, never been in honors… don’t torture yourself. I doubt one AP will be the difference between you getting in or not getting into college.
