Thinking of transfering to ASU

I am close to completing my first year at a community college in California. I am doing quite well in my classes as I will have 32 credits and about a 3.5 GPA once this semester comes to an end. I want to transfer to Arizona State to enter their supply chain management program because it sounds interesting to me. I am on the fence because I have received an offer to play soccer for CSU Monterey Bay but if I attended their school then I would do accounting, which seems far less interesting to me. I was thinking that I could possibly even transfer to Monterey Bay after this year, play one season and finish my AA in business. Then I would transfer to Arizona State and complete my supply chain management degree. I wanted to know if this was even possible and what anyone thinks that I should do. If i choose to stay at my community college another year, then I will play on the team here and then transfer to Arizona State the next year. Then my competitive soccer career will most likely come to an end.

Transferring back to back like that is definitely not a good idea for several reasons.

Why would you choose to major in accounting at CSUM if that major does not interest you much? The major that you are considering at ASU is a branch within the Business department at the university. Unless you specifically want to work in accounting, there is no incentive to study accounting in undergrad. You could easily map your coursework to provide the same type of focus that you would receive at ASU at CSUM without going the accounting route.

And if you attend to work towards an MBA after graduation, then you can literally major in anything. ANYTHING. You can major in theatre for all they care. If you have a high GPA and a solid application, then MBA programs could not care less what you majored in. Supply Chain Management might sound interesting, but it is incredibly specific for a undergrad degree. It would be better to get whichever degree interests you most in a broad field, then narrow your focus to something that specific once you have entered an MBA program further down the road.

Thanks for the response,
What do you think would be a better major choice? With supply chain management from what I’ve researched it looks interesting, it’s a growing field, the pay is quite well, and it seems like it would not be terribly difficult to find a job after college. Do you think that I would an MBA to be successful in the field? or what do you suggest?

Supply chain management at WP Carey at ASU is the best of the best. Recruitment for graduates has not abated in almost 20 years. What I appreciate about the program is that is evolves as industry skills / needs develop. After all these years, SCM continues to be one of the highest paying fields out of WP Carey. The MBA in supply chain management is also one of the most outstanding graduate degrees at ASU. You can’t go wrong either way.

Thanks for the response. I recently decided that I am going to go to ASU and study supply chain management for sure. I have been actively trying to get into touch with an advisor at ASU for advice, but haven’t had any luck. I just would like to know if you think that it would be beneficial for me to do supply chain management and sustainability or just SCM by itself. All that I have read about it is that it is a concurrent degree and that you can earn two bachelor’s degrees at the same time. I want to know how many extra courses I would need to take and if you think it’s worth it basically.
Thanks again.

Ok, I was able to find the major map for supply chain management and sustainability. I looks like there are a couple summer courses that I would need to take each summer to get out on time. I will definately be taking a couple this summer to keep on track. My main concern is that there are some classes that I won’t be able to take at community college. Would I be able to stay at community college next fall then transfer to ASU mid-year for the spring semester? Do you think I would be able to stay on track if I did this. I would be open to transferring after I complete my first year but I already committed to playing soccer in the fall for my CC and I would love to save the semesters worth of tuition if I could.
It would be great if you could clarify for me, thanks again.

@Presto9, ASU does allow transfer at mid-year. As long as you are taking the required courses at CC (and they transfer), you would stay on track. Having said that, SCM at ASU has numerous opportunities you might be able to take advantage of if you were on campus. There might be internships or other programs that ASU students might apply for in the fall for the following summer. You should check out that aspect as well, so you can maximize your time at ASU and engaged in the SCM vibe on campus.
